Senator John Gorton was commissioned as Prime Minister of Australia on 10 January 1968. He was the only Senator in Australia’s history to be Prime Minister and the only Prime Minister to have ever served in the Senate.
To accord with the Westminster tradition that the Prime Minister be a member of the lower house of parliament Gorton resigned from the Senate on 1 February 1968 in order to contest the House of Representatives by-election for the seat of Higgins (previously held by the deceased Prime Minister Harold Holt). The by-election was held on 24 February and Gorton won comfortably. Between 2 and 23 February he was a member of neither house of parliament, though still Prime Minister.

Political and military rivals warned against the appointment of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain as lieutenant colonel of the 20th Maine in 1861, with one saying he was “nothing at all.” Chamberlain went on to save the Union left on Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, winning the Medal of Honor.

The famous Austrian chocolate cake, the Sachertorte, while sold to tourists at the Sacher Hotel in Vienna, was not named for the hotel. It was named for Franz Sacher, who was a 16-year old apprentice to Prince Wenzel von Metternich’s head chef. The prince directed the chef to come up with a new and special dessert for his guests. The chef took ill and his apprentice came up with the torte.
