Paddy Nolan was a well-known criminal lawyer in the Northwest Territories of Canada in the late 19th century. An Irish immigrant, he lived up to the Irish stereotype of a quick-witted humourist.
On one occasion, he was in court opposing R.B. Bennett, a well-known lawyer who had a reputation for pomposity. Bennett was accompanied by a junior lawyer, and would bark out commands: “Boy! Get me Phipson on Evidence!.” Boy! get me Kenney on Crimes!"
After several of these commands, Nolan turned to his own junior and loudly stated: “Boy! get me Bennett on Bologney!”, cracking up the courtroom.
Undeterred, Bennett went on to become Prime Minister of Canada. Nolan’s son, who articled with Bennett, served on the Supreme Court of Canada.
