When Mark Twain was growing up in Hannibal, it was already the third largest city in Missouri, and during his lifetime, it had more inhabitants than it has now.

Missouri is nicknamed the “Show Me” state. The nickname is usually attributed to a speech by Congressman Willard Vandiver, who said " I’m from Missouri, and you have got to show me." However, the phrase was used before Vandiver’s speech, and some reports say it comes from the fact that Missourians had trouble following instructions and had to constantly be shown how to do things.

The New Madrid earthquakes of 1811/12 were centred on the town of that name in what is now Missouri. They were some of the most powerful earthquakes ever felt in the eastern USA. Land uplifts from the quake caused waterfalls on the Mississippi River.

On 3 October 1998 a referendum was held in the Northern Territory on a proposal that it be granted statehood of the Commonwealth of Australia. The referendum was defeated by 51.9% to 48.1%.
The first and largest attack by a foreign power on Australian territory was the bombing by Japan of Darwin, Northern Territory on 19 February 1942. The goal was to prevent the Allies from contesting the invasions of Java and Timor. Darwin was later ravaged by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day, 1974.
Chester Gould originally meant to call the hero of his comic strip “Plainclothesman Tracy”, but decided that was too long, and changed the name to “Dick Tracy”.
Tracy, California, incorporated in 1910, is named after Central Pacific Railroad director Lathrop J. Tracy.
Though today Spencer Tracy seems an almost avuncular or grandfatherly (depending on how late in his career) calming personality on screen, in real life he was known for his fierce temper and wild lifestyle that included pill abuse and problem drinking. Katharine Hepburn stated that he was upon occasion physically abusive, yet she remained with him in an open secret relationship and was with him when he died of a heart attack in his apartment; he had been separated from his wife for many years but they never divorced out of his respect for her Catholic beliefs.

The current Pope is the first Catholic leader of the church to take the pontifical name “Francis,” after St. Francis of Assisi, honoring his commitment to peacemaking and the poor.
Theodoros II or Tawadros II is the current Pope, or first among equals, of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, most of whose members reside in Egypt. Despite the name, the residence and seat are in Cairo. The church’s election of a pope does not involve colored smoke, but the drawing of the name of one of the synod’s top three vote-getters, from a glass chalice, by a blindfolded boy who is considered to have been guided by the hand of God.
