Ethiopia, dominated by the Coptic church, has had a continuous Christian majority longer than any other country in the world.
Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, attended the late President John F. Kennedy’s November 1963 funeral in full uniform. He’s to the right, saluting, here: http://diretribune.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/12_112342396.jpg
The emperor penguin is so named because it is the largest and heaviest species of penguin, somewhat larger than the similar king penguin. The emperor’s dorsal side and head are black and sharply delineated from the white belly, pale-yellow breast and bright-yellow ear patches. It is also he only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter, requiring it to make long treks of up to 75 miles over the ice shelves to breeding colonies.
One species of penguin actually occurs naturally in the northern hemisphere. The Humboldt Penguin is common along most of the coast of Peru, occurs regularly on the coast of Ecuador, and as an occasional vagrant as far north as Colombia. It is named for the cold Humbold Current, sweeping up the west coast of South America.
I think that may be a stretch. The equator passes through only the northernmost part of Ecuador. While an occasional bird may appear in Colombia, I would argue that it is not native to the northern hemisphere.
The Panama hat is actually made in Ecuador, from leaves of the *toquilla *palm. They got the wrong name in English-speaking countries from their appearance of having originated in their usual transshipment point in Panama. A “superfino” Panama hat can hold water, and when rolled for storage, can pass through a wedding ring.
The scene in Apollo 13, where Marilyn Lovell’s wedding ring slipped off her finger while in the shower on the morning of her husband Jim’s launch, actually happened in real life. She says that she wore her ring every day since their marriage, and that was the only time it ever came off unexpectedly.
The meaning of “native” could be disputed, which is why I did not use it. Penguins can be seen in their natural habitat, present by their own volition, at places north of the equator. Several of the Galapagos Islands are also north of the Equator, and the Galapagos Penguin species occurs only there.

The song ‘Ring of Fire’, written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore, has been recorded by:
Johnny Cash (biggest hit of his career)
Eric Burden & The Animals
Social Distortion
Alan Jackson
DragonForce
and of course
Wall of Voodoo!
Johnny Cash’s first wife, Vivian Luberto, denied June Carter’s authorship of “Ring of Fire”, claiming “The truth is, Johnny wrote that song, while pilled up and drunk, about a certain private female body part.” It was first recorded by June’s sister Anita, also of the bluegrass legends Carter Family, but it was Johnny’s idea, from a dream, to add the mariachi trumpets that helped make it a huge hit.
President Jimmy Carter had two Secretaries of State. Cyrus Vance, a former Johnson Administration official, resigned after the Iranian hostage rescue effort went fatally awry, and his successor, Ed Muskie, served until the end of the Carter Presidency.
Hawkman’s secret identity was Carter Hall. In the Golden Age, he was an archeologist who use the mystical “ninth metal” that allowed him to fly. In the Silver Age, he was a police officer from the planet Thanager.
Staple Inn Hall is located in High Holborn in London and dates from around 1415. It was originally used as a building where wool merchants stayed and haggled their contracts. It currently houses the offices of the UK Institute of Actuaries.
Winston Churchill was offered the title Duke of London and elevation to the House of Lords by King George VI after his staggering election defeat in 1945, but declined, looking ahead to the political comeback that he eventually pulled off.
Dukes County, Massachusetts, is the most populous of the three counties in the lower 48 located on an island with no bridge connection to the mainland.
Churchill was also mindful of the effect that a peerage would have in curtailing his son Randolph’s career in the House of Commons.
As it turned out, Randolph’s political career was less than stellar.
King George III had seven sons who were Royal Dukes: George, Duke of Cornwall; Frederick, Duke of York; William, Duke of Clarence; Edward, Duke of Kent; Ernest, Duke of Cumberland; Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex; and Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge.
The capital of South Australia is named for Adelaide, wife of William, Duke of Clarence and later King William IV.
Adelaide’s main street is King William Street.
The 1962 hit song Duke of Earl originally was not intended to be released when it was first sung: it was a method of doing vocal exercises for The Dukays until one day, member Eugene Dixon (who later changed his name to Gene Chandler) ad-libbed verses to their practice jingle.
The Église-St Eugène-Ste Cécile is located in the 9th arrondissement in Paris. It was completed in 1855 and was the first church in France to be built with an entirely metallic frame.
