Good one, I like it! But did you know that I was in that bar. I was the 6’, 195-lb Marine. After the sailor said that I asked him, “So, I’ve heard that at the end of the gangway when you board every Navy vessel there’s a big sign saying SLEEP ON YOUR BACK OR SOMEONE ELSE WILL. Is that true?”
Silence.
“Oh, and while you’re thinking about that, what, exactly does it mean to Yo Ho Blow the Man Down?”
More silence.
I’m no longer 195-lbs. But I’m not as lean, not as mean, but still a Marine.
In play: A sailor serving abroad with infantry units is sometimes called a bluejacket.
The Coloumbus Blue Jackets, of the National Hockey League, chose their team nickname because Ohio contributed more of its population to the Union Army than any other state, while many of the Blue Coats worn by the Union soldiers were manufactured in Columbus.
President Abraham Lincoln’s second Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, was born and raised in Steubenville, Ohio; a statue of him still stands outside the Jefferson County Courthouse there. It was President Andrew Johnson’s attempted firing of Stanton that triggered the impeachment crisis of 1868.
There is some debate as to whether Edwin Stanton said “Now he belongs to the ages” or “to the angels”, with scholars noting that Stanton’s faith makes the latter reading more likely.
Drew Stanton, as quarterback for the Michigan State Spartans, led them to the biggest comeback in NCAA Div. I-A football history, scoring 38 unanswered points in the last 24:54 of their game against Northwestern in 2006, for a final score of 41-38. He is now a backup to Carson Palmer on the Arizona Cardinals.
Edwin Stanton was born in Steubenville OH which is just down the Ohio River from Toronto OH. Toronto was named after the Ontario city because its early residents liked that city. Actor Robert Urich hails from Toronto OH. Urich died too young, 55, of one of the rarest forms of soft tissue cancer. A little farther up the Ohio are Stratton and Empire OH. Canadian Football League Hall of Famer Don Sutherin hails from Empire. Sutherin won the Grey Cup Championship seven times - four as a player and three as a coach.
The Ohio River is the largest of all of the Mississippi River’s tributaries.
The Urich’s tyrannulet (Phyllomyias urichi) is a diminutive species of bird in the Tyrannidae (flycather) family. It is endemic to Venezuela.
Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.
Only one species of tyrranulet, the northern beardess tyrranulet, occurs in the United States, irregularly reported near the Mexican border, where they lay “anchor eggs”…
The platypus is one of the five species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth and is the sole living representative of its family. The other four species of monotremes are all echidnas
Henry the Hexapus was a six-limbed octopus found by British marine scientists in 2008. The name alludes to King Henry VIII, who had six wives. The octopus was found off the coast of North Wales in a lobster pot, and was held in captivity at the Blackpool Sea Life Centre in North West England. His unusual number of arms was not immediately noticed, and appears to have resulted from a natal anomaly, rather than a physical accident
The Pacific Northwest tree octopus is an endangered breed of octopus living in the trees of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula rain forests. It will line its nest with dollar bills that people leave as a donation.
Asiana 214 crashed on landing at SFO at 1128 PDT on Sat 06 Jul 2013. Tragically, three teenaged girls died. Fortunately, the other passengers, of the 307 aboard, did not.
The plane approached too low and hit the ground just short of the runway.
Losses after the crash include the jobs of an NTSB intern and three KTVU Channel 2 producers, Roland De Wolk, Christina Gastelu and Brad Belstock. They were fired for falling for a hoax that reported Asiana 214’s cockpit crew names.
This from the KTVU 2 noon broadcast:
**Captain Sum Ting Wong
Wi Tu Lo
Ho Lee Fuk
Bang Ding Ow
**
Again, and now obviously, a hoax. KTVU claims they had contacted the NTSB and an intern confirmed the accuracy of the names. That intern was fired by the NTSB.
This was reported on the air by KTVU 2’s Tori Campbell on their noon broadcast, about half an hour after the crash.
it’s a Korean airlines, those are Chinese names, that’s racist; so at least please use Korean names like Captain Park Ma Plen Tu-Sun

A young Virginia Woolf was among those who took part in the notorious Dreadnought hoax of 1910, pretending to be part of an Abyssinian royal delegation and being given a tour of the pride of the Royal Navy.
Henry Hudson was the victim of a mutiny. He, his son, and seven others were set adrift in a small open boat in Hudson Bay by his crew. They were never seen again.
In the early 1920s, Ford sponsored a weekly newspaper (the Dearborn Independent) that published strongly antisemitic views. At the same time, Ford had a reputation as one of the few major corporations actively hiring black workers and also hired women and handicapped men at a time when doing so was uncommon.
