Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

On June 9, 1999, the St. Louis Cardinals, in the fifth inning against the Royals, had three players on the field at once who had been diagnosed and treated for cancer and recovered and resumed their MLB careers: Right fielder Eric Davis, catcher Eli Marrero, and relief pitcher Scott Radinsky.

Jefferson Davis led the Confederate States of America as president from 1861-65. When his Mississippi estate was badly damaged by storms a few years ago, the majority of repair costs were borne by the very United States he had done his level best to break up.

Brower’s Spring, at 9000-feet elevation in Montana, is the source of the Jefferson River. Those waters flow through the Jefferson, the Missouri, and finally the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico, thus forming the 4th-longest river in the world.

Jefferson Milhouse D’Arcy (played by Ted McGinley) is the alias of Marcy Rhode D’Arccy’s second husband , a “pretty boy” who married her for her money on Married…With Children.During the course of the series, it is revealed that Jefferson spent time in prison for selling contaminated land as a vacation spot to several people, including Al. He also used to be in the CIA and still has connections there.

The Romanian word for “children” is “copiii”, thus being the only common word in any widely-spoken European language that has a triple-letter sequence. It is the plural nominative definite form of declined “copil”, child.

Words with a letter repeated thrice in succession are indeed very rare in English. Merriam-Webster shows ‘Hmmm’ as an alternate spelling of the interjection ‘Hmm.’ Wiktionary shows ‘Goddessship’ as an alternate spelling of ‘Goddess-ship.’ Merriam-Webster may also show this variant since Goddess-ship Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster takes you to “Aren’t you smart – you’ve found a word that is only available in the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary. AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted is the solo debut studio album by American rapper Ice Cube. “AmeriKKKa” is an alternate spelling of “America” by cynics to refer to America’s racism, invoking the KKK of the Ku Klux Klan.

The present Ku Klux Klan began as a loose coalition of anti-Black groups in the 1950’s, but there were two prior groups called “Ku Klux Klan”: a briefly-lived one immediately after the Civil War, and one in the early 20th century which had several million members at its peak.

The first Ku Klux Klan was affiliated with groups like The Knights of the White Camelia. Among those “Knights” was Louisiana Judge Taylor Beattie, who eventually led the Thibodaux massacre of 1887.

Nathan Bedford Forrest, after whom Forrest Gump was named, was a noted Confederate cavalry officer during the Civil War and one of the founders of the Ku Klux Klan, although he later quit.

On April 12, 1864, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led his forces in the attack and capture of Fort Pillow, in Henning, Tennessee, on the Mississippi River. Many African American Union soldiers were killed in the battle. A controversy arose around the actions on May 3, 1864 about whether Forrest conducted or condoned a massacre of negro soldiers, white Tennessee Unionists, and Confederate deserters, who had surrendered there. The issue is still debated today about Forrest’s actions there.

Bedford Hills, NY has a population density of 3000/sq mi. This is due to the population of right around 3000 people and a size of almost exactly 1 sq mi.

There is a bulldog that sounds almost exactly like Chewbacca.

The use of consecutive adverbs in a sentence, such as almost exactly, is not a grammatical problem. However, it may not sound correct to some. But if the first adverb is very or rather, consecutive adverbs do not sound so awkward.

Off-play:

It pains me to nitpick a nitpick, but the Queen of Canada is the Canadian head of state.

In-play:

Four Canadian Prime Ministers have served non-consecutive terms: MacDonald, Meighen, King (who served three separate terms) and Trudeau père.

The monarch in the UK is also the monarch in many other members of the Commonwealth (including the monarch of Canada) but on 11 December 1936 the King of the UK and the King of the Irish Free State were two different people.

Still in play:

A 2016 study by a group of research ecologists concluded that the monarch butterfly population has a substantial probability of quasi-extinction, from 11–57% over 20 years.

Monarch butterflies can fly up to 265 miles in a day. They have been known to travel over 3,000 miles on their seasonal migrations.

Monarch butterflies are among the many living creatures which can determine direction from the Earth’s magnetic field. Magnetic detection is accomplished with cryptochrome — a protein surrounding a pigment chromophore. How this chemical detects the magnetic field is a major puzzle; after all the energy associated with that field is far too weak to affect normal chemical reactions. It is now believed that quantum physics plays a key role. Within a key chemical bond, a triplet of electrons will be in some particular entangled state which can be perturbed by a magnetic field.
