Under the International System of Units (via the International Committee for Weights and Measures, or CIPM), since 1967 the second has been defined as the duration of 9192631770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom. In 1997 CIPM added that the periods would be defined for a caesium atom at rest, and approaching the theoretical temperature of absolute zero (0 K), and in 1999, it included corrections from ambient radiation. Absolute zero implies no movement, and therefore zero external radiation effects (i.e., zero local electric and magnetic fields).
The Noth Carolina resident who was assigned telephone number 919-263-1770 had his number changed because he was getting so many crank calls from physicists.
John A. Lejeune was the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps. He joined the Marines in 1890, and was Commandant from 1920 to 1929 when he retired from the Marine Corps on 10 November of that year. The Marine Corps League is the only Congressionally chartered United States Marine Corps-related veterans organization in the United States. Its Congressional Charter was approved by the 75th U.S. Congress and signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 04 August 1937. The organization credits its founding — in 1923 — to legendary Marine Corps Commandant John A. Lejeune.
Lejeune died in 1942, at the age of 75. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, in North Carolina, was named in his honor during WWII.
Lejeune pronounced his name “la-JERN” but for some reason I cannot yet determine his name is commonly pronounced “la-JUNE”.
Stephen Hawking, Paul McCartney, and Harrison Ford were all born in 1942.
Harrison Ford starred in 6 of the top grossing movies released between 1977 and 1989: Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Return of the Jedi (1983) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine have all played the movie role of US Marine Jack Ryan, from the Tom Clancy novels.
The New Jersey Pine Barrens area is the largest surviving open space on the eastern seaboard between the northern forests of Maine and the Everglades of Florida. This remote, isolated area of 1.1 million acres has been designated for special growth management rules, preserving stretches of forest, rare species of plants and wildlife, and vulnerable freshwater aquifers.
The Pine Barrens are the supposed home of the New Jersey Devil, a dragon-like monster born in the 1700s to a local resident, Mrs. Leeds.
At 53°47′59″N 1°32′57″W (53.799°, −1.549°), and 190 miles (310 km) north-northwest of central London, Leeds is located on the valley of the River Aire in the eastern foothills of the Pennines. The city center lies in a narrow section of the Aire Valley at about 206 feet (63 m) above sea level while the district ranges from 1,115 feet (340 m) in the far west on the slopes of Ilkley Moor to about 33 feet (10 m) where the rivers Aire and Wharfe cross the eastern boundary. The center of Leeds is part of a continuously built-up area extending to Pudsey, Bramley, Horsforth, Alwoodley, Seacroft, Middleton and Morley.
The Who’s Live at Leeds has been cited as the best live rock recording of all time by The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, the BBC,Q magazine, and Rolling Stone. It has been ranked number 170 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The venue at which it was recorded, the University Refectory, was named a national landmark, commemorated with a blue plaque. On June 17, 2006, over 36 years after the original concert, the Who returned to perform at the Refectory, at a gig organized by Andy Kershaw. Kershaw stated the gig was “among the most magnificent I have ever seen”. A Rolling Stone readers’ poll in 2012 ranked it the best live album of all time
There have been two Hollywood actos named Byron Barr. The first one appeared in a dozen film in the 1940s. The second one, a decade later, assumed the stage name Gig Young and had a successful career. His list of five wives included Elizabeth Montgomery. He shot the last one, then turned the gun on himself.
Physicians prescribe the drug Actos to regulate blood sugar levels as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes. The drug made billions for its manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and was the company’s blockbuster drug. Unfortunately, long-term use of Actos is linked to a number of serious health complications, including bladder cancer that led to lawsuits against Takeda.

There are more than sixty species of the perennial plant phlox. All but one are North American natives (Phlox sibirica occurs in Siberia). Phlox can be tall, with thick, glossy leaves, or it can spread across the ground with needle-like leaves. It can be a midsummer sun-lover or bloom in shady woods in April. All forms have five petals, often with a colored eye, on a tubular base.
The genus name, Phlox, is derived from the Greek word for flame. Phlox is sometimes called flame flower because of its intense, hot colors. The foliage of Phlox is a food for the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including dot moth, hummingbird hawk-moth and the Schinia indiana flower moth, which feeds exclusively on Phlox pilosa. Phlox species are also a popular food source for groundhogs, rabbits and deer.
Santa Claus truly does exist. Santa Claus is a town in the southwestern part of the state of Indiana.
There are no happy hours in Indiana — while a bar can offer all-day drink specials, state law prohibits retailers from selling alcoholic beverages during a portion of the day for a reduced cost.
The words “happy” and “hour” have appeared together for centuries when describing pleasant times. In act I, scene 2 of William Shakespeare’s King Henry V (written in about 1599), for example, King Henry says, “Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour That may give furtherance to our expedition . . . .” The use of the phrase, “Happy Hour,” to refer to a scheduled period of discounted drinks with free snacks , however, is of much more erecent vintage.
In 1403, prince Henry V joined forces with his father to fight Harry Hotspur at the Battle of Shrewsbury. It was there that the sixteen-year-old prince was almost killed by an arrow that became stuck in his face. An ordinary soldier might have died from such a wound, but Henry had the benefit of the best possible care. Over a period of several days, John Bradmore, the royal physician, treated the wound with honey to act as an antiseptic, crafted a tool to screw into the broken arrow shaft and thus extract the arrow without doing further damage, and then flushed the wound with alcohol. The operation was successful, but it left Henry with permanent scars, evidence of his experience in battle. For eighteen months, in 1410–11, Henry was in control of the country during his father’s ill health, and he took full advantage of the opportunity to impose his own policies, but when the king recovered, he reversed most of these and dismissed the prince from his council.
The town of Broken Arrow, in northeastern Oklahoma, is the largest suburb of Tulsa. Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Brad Penny hails from Broken Arrow OK. In his MLB career, Penny pitched for, in turn, the Marlins, Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants, Cardinals, Tigers, Giants again, and the Marlins again.
Alpha Brazle was a 1940s relief pitcher born in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. He is the earliest-born player I ever saw play at a live MLB game, and would have celebrated his 100th birthday last year.
Alpha particles consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle identical to a helium nucleus. They are generally produced in the process of alpha decay. Alpha radiation is about 20 times more dangerous and up to 1000 times more dangerous than an equivalent activity of beta emitting or gamma emitting radioisotopes, respectively.
