Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

The 1999 Bollywood film *Mann*is a frame-by-frame copy of An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. While the plot-twist pre-climax was inspired by the 1976 movie Bayalu Daari, the climax sequence was inspired by the 1983 movie Kaamana Billu.

Kamana Wanna Lei U. is a company and community on Facebook, and a Hawaiian play on English words.

No doubt by horny young men.

(Yes, the link is SFW. Pretty boring, actually.)

Lei Day has been officially celebrated on May 1 in Hawaii since 1929, with festivals, contests and events throughout the islands. Many celebrations are also held at local schools. Elementary schools hold celebrations crowning Lei Day kings, queens and princesses.

The Romanian auto company Dacia is the sixth largest producer of automobiles in Europe, with net income of 4.6 trillion Lei. The company was originally started in 1966, to produce Renaults under license for the Soviet Bloc market.

The Dacia Sandero is a subcompact car produced jointly by the French manufacturer Renault and its Romanian subsidiary Dacia since 2007. The car was the focus of a running gag on the British television programme Top Gear. Presenter James May would often exclaim “Good News!” and explain a pointless fact about the Sandero during the show’s news segment, to which co-host Jeremy Clarkson would reply “Great!” before abruptly changing the subject.

In Top Gun, the highest-grossing film of 1986, the character portrayed by Kelly McGillis is based on Christine Fox, a civilian flight instructor the producers met while doing research to prepare for the movie. Fox eventually rose through the ranks at the Pentagon, retiring in May 2014 as Acting Deputy Secretary of Defense, the highest post ever held by a woman at the Department of Defense.

The Porsche 356 Speedster that Kelly McGillis’ character drove in Top Gun was not a real one. It was a replica built by a company called Intermeccanica. The logo on the hood handle is blue and that is an Intermeccanica crest, not a Porsche one.

The iconic Chevrolet logo is a stylized version of the white cross on the flag of Switzerland, the home country of America auto pioneer Louis Chevrolet. Originally blue, the logo was changed to gold in 2001.

Chevrolet, Kentucky was named after the Chevrolet Series 490 automobile, made from 1915 to 1922. It was the first car seen on local roads.

Much of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, dedicated to the classic Chevrolet sports car, was sucked into a sinkhole in February 2014.

The 1959 TV show Bonanza aired on Saturday evenings opposite “Dick Clark’s Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show” and “John Gunther’s High Road” on ABC, and Perry Mason on CBS. Bonanza’s initial ratings were respectable, often coming in behind Mason.

NBC moved Bonanza to Sundays at 9:00 pm Eastern in 1966 with new sponsor Chevrolet (replacing The Dinah Shore Chevy Show). The new time slot caused Bonanza to soar in the ratings, and it eventually reached number one by 1964, an honor it would keep for four years.

The Beechcraft Bonanza has been in production since 1947, making it the longest-produced airplane in history (despite many model updates along the way, including changing the iconic V-tail to a straight one). For military aircraft, the record is held by the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, which has been produced since 1954.

The Hercules beetle is a species of rhinoceros beetle native to the rainforests of Central America, South America, and the Lesser Antilles and is the longest currently existing species of beetle in the world. Male Hercules beetles may reach up to 17.5 cm (7") in length (including the horn).

Steve Reeves, the former Mr. America body builder and actor, was best known for his role as Hercules in the films “Hercules” and “Hercules Unchained”. At one point in his career, he turned down the lead role in “A Fist Full of Dollars”, as he did not believe that Italians would ever make a western film.

The Righteous Brothers song “Unchained Melody” may be most familiar for its use in the film Ghost, even though it was written as the theme song for the prison-escape film Unchained.

The Ghost Brigades (2006) is the second book in Ohio author John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War military science fiction series, which now includes nine books or short stories.

Spike Jones and his City Slickers recorded a version of “Ghost Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend” in the voices of two old Jewish men on a park bench.

The last spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway was hammered in at Craigallachie, British Columbia. The name of the station was chosen by George Stephens, the President of the CPR, in memory of a crisis point in the construction of the CPR.

At one point, it looked like the CPR would go under during construction unless Stephens was able to arrange additional financing in London. He managed to get it, but knew that he was being watched closely because the knowledge whether he got financing could be used for considerable speculative purposes by financiers.

Stephens was a Scot, and his clan’s motto was “Stand Fast, Craigallachie.” He had arranged a code word with the CPR headquarters in Montreal to let them know if he had succeeded in getting the financing.

When he got the financing, he went to the cable office and sent a one-word cable to Montreal: ‘Craigallachie’.

On June 15, 1859, the shooting of a pig led to the so-called “Pig War” over the border between the US and British North America (and the borders among the state of Washington and the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia). The territory in dispute was the San Juan Islands, which lie between Vancouver Island and the North American mainland. With no shots exchanged and no human casualties, this dispute was a bloodless conflict.

Canada and Denmark have never resolved the rights to Hans Island, a barren rock in the strait between Ellesmere Island and Greenland. When Danish military excursions visit the island, they leave a bottle of schnapps for the Canadians they know will visit soon. When Canadians go there, they take the schnapps and leave a bottle of Canadian Club whiskey with a note reading “Welcome to Canada”.
