In the animated comedy series Futurama, set in the 31st Century, astronomers have changed the name of the planet Uranus, due to centuries of sophomoric “your anus” jokes. The new name of the planet is “Urectum.”

The main campus of the University of Kansas is in Lawrence, Kansas. Lawrence is between the Kansas and Wakarusa Rivers.
The Kansas River flows west to east and is about 150 miles long. Its mouth is at the Missouri River, at the south end of where that river forms part of the state boundary between Kansas and Missouri. The rest of that state boundary is the line of longitude at 94° 35′ W longitude.
The Wakarusa River is a tributary of the Kansas River and is about 80 miles long. The Wakarusa River joins the Kansas River about 8 miles east of Lawrence.

The Kansas River (also known as the Kaw) is formed at the junction of the Republican River and the Smoky Hill River. This location can be found at the aptly-named city of Junction City, Kansas.
Both the Republican and Smoky Hill rise in Eastern Colorado. The Republican flows in a northeasterly direction into Nebraska, where it eventually turns southward into Kansas. The Smoky (as we call it here) flows basically straight eastward through Kansas.

Bubonic plague results in symptoms including buboes which are painful swellings typically in the thighs, groin, armpits, or neck. They are caused by flea bites that then spread bacteria to the lymph nodes. The bacteria replicates, resulting in swelling. Buboes are also symptoms of other diseases, but in plague patients, when the buboes swell to such a size that they burst, those patients tend to survive.

The bubonic plague is thought to be the ‘Black Death’ that swept through Asia, Europe, and Africa in the 14th century and killed an estimated 50 million people. It is believed that anywhere from 25% to 60% of the European population died as a result of the plague.
“Taking the black” was a slang phrase in Westeros in the *A Song of Ice and Fire *novels of George R.R. Martin. It meant that one had joined the Night’s Watch, a quasi-monastic military order, the members of which wore black cloaks and guarded the wall at the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was a descendant of the Delano family, the ancestral family of U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. One paternal ancestor, Edmund Ingalls, from Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England, emigrated to America, settling in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was also a third cousin, once removed, of President Ulysses S.
