Dan Ackroyd played both Richard M. Nixon and Jimmy Carter on Saturday Night Live with a mustache, even though neither President had one in office.
The only US Presidents to sport mustaches were Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Howard Taft.
James A. Garfield, Republican of Ohio, is the only person ever to be elected directly to the Presidency from the U.S. House of Representatives.
James Garfield is one of seven men born in Ohio who have been President of the USA. The only state that has produced more presidents is Virginia; eight Virginians have been President.
George Washington, the first Virginian to be elected President and, as it happens, the first President of the United States under the Constitution, was played by American actor David Morse in the acclaimed HBO miniseries John Adams, and was nominated for an Emmy. Morse was perhaps best known before that for being part of the cast of the TV medical comedy-drama St. Elsewhere.
George and Martha Washington did not have any children together. Martha was a widow when she married George, and had two children with her first husband: her son John Parke Custis, and daughter Martha Parke Custis.
It is not known why the Washingtons did not have children of their own together, as they were both young when they married (George was 26, Martha was 28). It is hypothesized that a bout of smallpox which George suffered during a trip to Barbados with his half-brother Lawrence in 1751 may have rendered him sterile, or that Martha may have suffered an injury during her daugther’s birth, making her unable to bear another child.
The young George Washington’s 1751 trip to Barbados marked the only time he ever left what is now the United States. The house where he stayed is now open to the public. Then-First Lady Hillary Clinton unveiled a plaque there in 1997.
The Calendar Act of 1750, passed by the Parliament of Great Britain, changed the British calendar from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. Because the New Year began on March 25 in the Julian Calendar, it meant that the year of 1751 only had 282 days.
Today, November 5, is Guy Fawkes Day, a night of fireworks and bonfires in Britain, marking the anniversary of Fawkes’ failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. 13 men including Guy Fawkes plotted to blow up the House of Parliament in London.
A longstanding bit of British political black humor has it that “Guy Fawkes is the last man to have entered Parliament with honest intentions.”
The Parliament of Canada is seated in Ottawa, Ontario, and Ontario is 415,600 square miles in size. That makes Ontario almost twice the size of Texas (268,600 sq mi) and significantly smaller than Alaska (665,400 sq mi).
Canada has ten provinces and three territories. Quebec is the largest province (595,391 square miles), and Prince Edward Island is the smallest (2,185 square miles).
With 808,185 square miles, Nunavut is the largest territory. The total population of Nunavut is 35,944 inhabitants.
Irish tenor Colm Wilkinsonm who sang the role of Che on the original concept album of Evita, and originated the role of Jean Valjean in the West End and Broadway productions of Les Miserables, relocated his family to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1989, when he was offered the title role in the original Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera playing at the Pantages Theatre (now Ed Mirvish Theatre). He has lived in Toronto ever since, and became a Canadian citizen in the early 2000s.
I saw Colm Wilkinson perform in Les Miserables in London in late 1985, and he was nothing short of awesome. He turned 75 on June 5 of this year.

The original French version of the musical Les Miserables premiered in Paris in 1980. The English-language adaptation ran in London from October 1985 to July 2019, making it the longest-running musical in the West End. It is also the second longest-running musical in the world after the original Off-Broadway run of The Fantasticks.
The British synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys first recorded their song West End Girls in late 1983 or early 1984, working with American producer Bobby Orlando. The original version was a minor dance hit, but after Pet Shop Boys cut their ties with Orlando in 1985, the duo re-recorded the song with producer Stephen Hague; the second recording became a #1 hit in both the US and the UK.
The three colors of the Orlando, Florida city flag are white, blue and yellow, depicting the Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain. It was adopted just two years ago.
