Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Orlando, Oklahoma is a small town (Pop. 201) in the north-central part of the state and about 50 miles north of Oklahoma City. It used to be called Cherokee, but the name was changed to Orlando when a post office was opened in 1889. Passenger train service through Orlando ceased after World War II ended, and construction of I-35 caused the town to lose most of its commercial highway traffic after 1964. Orlando is 3 miles west of I-35.

Although incumbent President Lyndon Baines Johnson, Democrat of Texas, overwhelmingly won election in his own right in 1964 (having succeeded to office upon the death of President John F. Kennedy the year before), that election marked the beginning of the crumbling of the “Solid South” in Democratic presidential politics, as Sen. Barry Goldwater, Republican of Arizona, carried Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina in addition to his home state.

Cher’s hit song Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, written by Bob Stone, contains themes of racism, statutory rape, teenage pregnancy and single mother hood. It starts with a 16 year old girl describing her life on the road with her mother and father, where her father picks up a boy just south of Mobile, Alabama and giving him a ride to Memphis, Tennessee. It ends with the boy and girl’s child describing her life on the road with her mother and grandfather.

Even though she is 73 years old, Cher continues to perform. She recently announced that she will continue her current tour in 2020, performing in over 20 locations next Spring.

Cher’s name contains only one of the vowels, an E. Bono Vox uses only the O, Adam Ant the A, Will Smith the I.

But damned if I can find a singer whose name contains only the U vowel.

Irish singer Bono’s acutal name is Paul David Hewson. His stage name (originally Bono Vox, now usually simply Bono) is a play on the Latin term “Bonavox,” meaning “good voice,” which was the name of a hearing-aid store in Dublin.

“Bona nox! bist a rechta Ox,” K. 561, is a song by Mozart in canon for four voices and with phrases for “good night” in Latin, Italian, French, English and German. It is often sung in expurgated versions, especially changing the last lines, in German:

  • scheiß ins Bett daß’ kracht;
    gute Nacht, schlaf fei g’sund
    und reck’ den Arsch zum Mund,*

which translate as
Shit in your bed and make it burst;
Good night, sleep tight,
And stick your ass to your mouth.

Here’s the Chorus Viennensis singing the unexpurgated version: Mozart - Bona nox - YouTube

Damned I am for forgetting Lulu!

In play: Tim Curry originated the role of Mozart in Broadway’s Amadeus, and has stated it was his favorite stage role. His performance earned him a Tony nomination,

Curry refers a variety of dishes originating in the Indian subcontinent that use a complex combination of spices or herbs. Curry is believed to have originated in the Southern states of India, where leaves from the curry tree were used as one of the spices. Typically, the spices used may include turmeric, cumin, coriander, ginger, and chili.

In British English, the term “ginger” is often used in reference to redheads; the term is seen by some as disparaging or insulting. Other terms which are sometimes used for red hair are “carrot top” and “carrot head,” and, in Australia, “Blue/Bluey,” “rufus,” and “ranga” (an insulting term, short for “orangutan”).

Actress Tina Louise, who played Ginger on Gilligan’s Island, was born in 1934. She was 20 years old when she started playing the role of Ginger. She took the role after Jayne Mansfield turned it down, and she played it from 1964 to 1967. She did later work, including in the movie The Stepford Wives (1975) when she was 41. The web records her measurements as 35-22-36.

Tina Louise was 30 years old when she started on Gilligan’s Island. She always complained that the show ruined her career, but she found plenty of work after the series ended.

I saw Tim Curry live in Sheridan’s The School for Scandal in late 1985 in London, and he was awesome.

In play:

Ohio Gov. John Gilligan, a Democrat, served only a single term, 1971-75. His daughter, Kathleen Sebelius, later served as Governor of Kansas and United States Secretary of Health and Human Services. Gilligan and Sebelius are the only father and daughter ever to have both been elected American governors

Yes of course! Thank you.

In play: Tina Louise, of Gilligan’s Island, appeared in Playboy magazine in 1957, 1958, and 1959.

Jayne Mansfield turned down the role of Ginger Grant. A couple speculated reasons for this are…

  1. The role was clearly based on Marilyn Monroe, and Jayne did not like the comparison.
  2. Her sexuality could not be constrained by TV.

Jayne Mansfield the first major American actress in a Hollywood film to have a nude scene in Promises! Promises! (1963). She was 5’ 5” tall. Her measurements were 40-21-36.

Marilyn Monroe was to have done a nude scene in the unfinished Something’s Gotta Give, but she died during production. A cobbled together version of the movie can be found online. The movie was later remade as Move Over Darling, with Doris Day. Obviously, no nude scene in this one.

Like Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe was also 5’ 5" tall. Judy Garland was 4’ 11" tall. Liz Taylor was 5’ 2" tall. And Audrey Hepburn was tall, at 5’ 7".

Compared to 40-21-36 for Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn was 36-23-35.

Uhh, yeah, so I guess I’m on a measurements kick right now…

Queen Elizabeth I is estimated to have been between 5’3" and 5’5" in height. In contrast, her cousin and rival Mary Queen of Scots was almost 6 feet tall. The two never met in person.
