The most famous “deep background” source was “Deep Throat” during the Watergate scandal, who was later revealed to be Mark Felt, the Associate Director of the FBI.

Steve Allen wrote lyrics for the original “Hollywood Squares” theme (there were two, back in the late '60s and early '70s) and titled it “That Silly Song.” It was sung by HS original host Peter Marshall on an episode of Steve’s syndicated chat/variety show.
A couple of weeks later, the theme for HS was changed without any warning or explanation.
