If octopus started a thread suggesting that the Earth is flat and that in every rainstorm, you always hear thunder before seeing lightning, everyone who disagreed with him would be a “hive”.
So I don’t think we should take offense at its usage. If you just understand that “hive” just means “people who don’t share my delusion” then it’s a lot easier to understand his arguments.

Yeah. I mean, octopus can go into practically any thread on these boards and find Dopers vehemently disagreeing with one another on everything from movie reviews to traffic policy to optimal taxation levels to military strategy to immigration reform.
When we happen to all agree about basic facts such as that the earth is not flat and the moon landings were not faked and octopus is an irrational numpty, this is not because we’re some kind of “hive mind”.
