Maybe that is the worst thing he ever ate.
He is a master of the “I’m not touching you” school of debate, certainly.
Anyone else’s whiskers twitching at this new Dravot character? Shows up, immediately starts posting frequently, but instead of the short little drive-bys of the usual new arrival, the posts are involved and just happen to land in proximity to some of the board’s common hot-button topics.
His latest stunt is to drop a literary quote at the end of this thread which just happens to have a racial slur in it. Total coincidence, I’m sure.
That particular post looks EXTREMELY trock-ish. It’s kind of a, “Nah nah, I’m not touching you!” sort of post. “Oh, I am not using racist slurs, I’m merely quoting them.”
Seems like a “stir the pot” sort of poster. Though they sprinkle quite a few innocuous posts in as well, as if they are establishing themselves as “just a regular person”.
I wondered when I saw their response in the xkcd thread and then noticed they’d posted in 10 threads within an hour of joining. I had decided I was just paranoid, but who knows. If it’s a sock, they are socking very poorly.
Or maybe this is the resurgence of message boards as everyone flees Twitter?
Just to be clear, I’m saying “trock” not just troll, because this is the sort of tactic that someone who has experience with the board would do.
100%. I pegged them as a troll at least just glancing at their first two threads. But the gratuitous racial slur quote delivered out of the blue removes all possible doubt. Good luck dealing with them, I’m just gonna put it on ignore.
Kind of reminds me of Martin Hyde, actually. Looking at his posting history, did that exact sort of thing on multiple occasions (at a quick glance, the word comes up 22 times when searching his “posted by” results… almost like he got a kick out of it). What a pathetic loser.
FTR, it’s not even a literary quote, it’s a line from a film, The Good Shepherd, a fictionalized account of the founding of the CIA counterintelligence division. “Edward Wilson” is a fictional character in the film, loosely modeled on the controversial first chief of the division, James Jesus Angleton. The quote was entirely made up by the screenwriters, not some revered piece of literary wisdom. Maybe that’s all the trock could come up with in his Googling for a “quote” containing his favourite racial slur.
One of the suspicion-raising things for me is that his posts are more or less forum-appropriate. The thematic separation of topic areas on the SDMB is, we have to admit, fairly complex and non-intuitive, and most newbies take a while to figure it out and make mistakes along the way. But not this guy. Could be he’s lucky; could be he carefully read the rules and descriptions and is properly observing board etiquette out of the gate; but it also could be a giveaway that he’s already familiar with how things are divvied up.
Most definitely a trock. The first post I saw was the one where they used the n word and I hope the mods get rid of them sooner than later.
Not just definitely. Officially. @dravot’s status has been officially changed to TROCK.
He was an old friend. He is heading for the cornfield now.
“We’re going to cornfield a friend, Yevgeni.”
Terrible trock, too obvious. Do better, whoever you were!
That’s the thing, trolls prove they can’t do better–that’s why they were originally banned.
That is a really interesting point, actually.
It’s the Trock version of Catch-22!
The Trock came back, the very next day
The Trock came back, we thought he was a goner!
But the Trock came back, he just couldn’t stay away.
Can you make a Trock sound now kids?
I saw a brand-new thread 4 hours ago, titled “The Red Wave!” I had a vaccination appointment I had to go to, so didn’t read it. Examination of Elections and the Pit, then a search just now, failed to bring it up. Was it his? [WE or another mod can PM me if that accords with protocol]
It’s a Catch 44! (Kudos if you get the reference.)
