Trolls R Us Resurrections

IDK… anyone who joined after I did is immediately suspicious. The younger generation. But me? I’m alright. Obviously. It really is an amazing coincidence that I happened to join at just the right time to not be suspect, though. Like that pool of water that finds itself in a puddle fit to match or something…

FWIW, I ended up here as follows: snopes to reddit via google search (specifically, a search hoping that snopes had maybe resurrected his forum turned up a thread for snopes refugees on reddit) to here (the reddit thread mentioned this place).

Still kind of a bummer the snopes forum pooped the bed.

Then there’s folks like me who joined over a decade ago but only post about three times a month so nobody really knows who I am.

Well you are a Mr.E.

Easy to remember username though.

Nah, you’re alright. You’ve got an honest look about you. I mean, sometimes I can just look at an avatar and pick out the troll. slicedalone, for example. Had them pegged the moment I spotted their avatar. The posts they had married to it were only confirmation of what I already suspected.

I appreciate that. I suppose since I like to follow this thread I’m already among the folks who hold a unique attachment to this place.

We accept you, gobba gobba

I never got this about that user name before. Thanks!

When I first discovered this place, I had a friend who would send me links to Cecil’s columns via AOL’s instant messenger. From there, I just started exploring the site.

For the life of me, I can’t remember who that friend was.

It was the books, discovered in a second-hand bookstore, that led me to the columns, then online (back in the early days when being an internet habitue meant knowing the baud rate of your modem), then the message board. That was in 2003, and, like a stubborn case of athlete’s foot, I’ve stuck around ever since.

You can always check this list:

Some are new members but many are old members who recently became active for the first time since the Discourse migration c. June 2020. I’d guess most trocks don’t make it to the member list, but you can see there are a few bans.

I found the board in about 2000, googling for counterarguments against gun nuts. I lurked for a while and actually registered on 9/11/01, because that was the first time anything happened I felt the need to post about.

There’s about a 0.001% chance this isn’t completely fake, isn’t there?

Why? It seems reasonable. Nothing outlandish. No strange arguments. The OP isn’t arguing with responses. No exceptional claims.

Note: I had already checked the user upon both registration and again when posting the OP.

I mean, it tweaked me as pretty much a distillation of every work-related “r/maliciouscompliance” or “r/pettyrevenge” reddit post ever.

But I suppose it could happen. Certainly, I have participated in it in good faith. If it’s a troll, it’s pretty esoteric and slow-rolling, albeit less salacious than the love life of a hawt paraplegic.

You mean the OP? Seems perfectly normal to me. Shitty behavior by small employers and employees unsure of their rights are extremely commonplace in my experience.

This exactly. It’s straight out of r/maliciouscompliance or r/AITA. Add in the fact that it’s a “long time listener, first time caller”, and I’m avoiding it as a troll. Others are certainly free to spend time there.

I broke a link upthread to prevent the back-linking feature from inadvertently calling someone a troll outside of the Pit.

Thank you - I thought if it was the thread URL it would be fine.

It’s pretty benign for all that.

“Dog bites man” is not really all that common but it does happen regularly. The story ring true because many of us are all too familiar with small business owners who would do exactly what was described. The fact that the aftermath is pretty much a nothingburger just adds to that.

If this one thing is how somebody is getting their jollies, it’s no real loss on our end. As recreational outrage goes, it rates a 1.5/10.
