Trolls R Us Resurrections

Maybe there is some kind of “#TrollTheOlds” challenge trending on TikTok now? And some teen decided to be more original than a Facebook, Quora or Reddit troll, and come here for jollies?

I mean, the ice bucket challenge was a thing at one point.

I certainly hope so.

So traumatized that she just HAS to talk to someone, and who better to talk to than a random internet board comprised of strangers that she doesn’t know from a hole in the ground? And what better solace could be gained than never coming back to said random board to see what the unknown strangers had to say?

Definitely legit.

Is that the one where she said she got arrested on Friday and sentenced two or three days later?

Indeed

‘I don’t know. I’m a fast cook, he’s a fast judge, I guess.’

On the moderator end, we just get buttons to agree with a flag or not (actually, there are a few different options for agreeing with a flag, to do things like automatically delete the post, but we generally prefer a more fine-tuned response, so we don’t usually do that). I think that those messages of “We’re looking into it” and “We agree there’s a problem, and are looking into it” are auto-generated from our “not a problem” and “is a problem” options.

We can also, when we choose, write our own custom message in response to a flag. Usually that’s not necessary, but if you see anything other than one of those standard messages, that’s something we actually wrote.

Oh, and with the Sanskrit digression, one interesting feature of Sanskrit’s writing system, as I understand it, is that similar sounds are represented by similar characters, and both the changes in the characters and their arrangement into the alphabet are systematic. The Latin alphabet has a little bit of that: ‘m’ and ‘n’ are right next to each other and similar in both shape and sound, for instance. But then we also have related sounds like ‘f’ and ‘v’ with completely different characters. As I understand it, in Sanskrit, you can take any character for an unvoiced sound, add the same bit to it, and produce the voiced version of the same sound.

The troll aroma is so strong.

I really need to quit reading threads right before bed. My sense of smell is obviously off when I’m tired.

I was wondering what interesting bonfire they hoped to be able to watch, and maybe the way the thread has now gone is the answer - some people taking it 100% seriously and White Knighting the “17-year-old girl” when other posters mock the trolling.

Hmmm? I should start a new thread: “why do I smell better before bedtime?”

Oh …wait. Maybe not.

My guess is that they didn’t get the response they wanted, felt embarrassed or realized this wasn’t the type of audience they wanted for their pity party, and moved on.

Are you really buying the OP as genuine?

I think they mean as a troll. Many Trolls crave pity parties and hand wringing.

But they barely even bothered to stick around long enough to even check said responses. Only 3 replies in the first 37 minutes.

I suspect a bot, set to run loose on the 'net, programmed to post soap opera-ish crap on whatever board it randomly surfs over to, then is gone ne’er to return.

If they sign out and don’t sign back in, how can you tell if they are checking the thread out or not?

I’ll have you know that almost all of my moderator interactions have been the automated “We agree there’s a problem and we’re looking into it” or a nuanced, personal response saying things like “It’s horrible, but it’s within the rules, but we’ll watching it” or “It was getting bad, but it seems to have burned out, thanks for flagging and let us know if it flares back up.”

The mods, even when disagreeing with me, have made every attempt to make me feel that my concerns were addressed! Even if it wasn’t necessary!

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Honestly though, if the answer is of the first sort, I’d rather have a automated message, because it means they were busy fixing the problem, which has been the case to date, although sometimes I wish the mods would come down with more fire and brimstone and less “Get along, or there will be a warning!”.

Equally honestly, I can’t help but feel horribly wronged when I’ve been given my mod notes, which I’ve fully earned, and if said mods had been less equally forgiving, would have justified warnings. So there is no pleasing me I guess?

No. She said that she was sentenced on Friday and had until Monday to get her affairs in order so she could spend 30 days incarcerated. She doesn’t say (at least I didn’t see it) when the accident happened nor when she was arrested.

My first thought when I saw the title was “probably a troll, let’s see what it’s about” and then I read the OP. I thought the scenario was at least plausible, I was pleasantly surprised by the acceptance of full responsibility and resolve to do better, and I didn’t think at all about the generally good grammar and spelling and how unlikely that would be. I couldn’t make up my mind how to respond, so I didn’t. Nobody else had responded yet at that time, and I never did think I had anything useful to add. Seems like I was right about that much anyway. What bothered me the most about the story was the complete lack of concern for the victim and lack of description of how badly they were injured. At the time I thought it was unfortunately uncaring, now I think it was an unwillingness to be pinned down to specifics.

There are seventeen year olds with good grammar and spelling, though they may not always bother using it.

Choosing here to post about it, when they’re not already a poster for some other reason, seems odder to me than the grammar and spelling. But some people are odd (raises hand; though I’m odd in different fashions.)

It’s funny, I bought that part (about looking for words of wisdom) because I was thinking that, if the story were true and her parents are really upset with her, she might well be feeling isolated with no-one sensible to talk to.
