Okay I had the opportunity to read the rest of that thread. FWIW I’m not 100% convinced that’s him, but oh boy are the similarities striking. It was funny I started reading the thread again and when he first shows up he’s almost being reasonable. It doesn’t take long for the veil to drop and then I get to a post that’s blank except for the word summary. No I didn’t click it.
I happened to be the first to reply to Bulls99 in the “Is trump confused?” thread. I figured them for a troll from the start, with their opening statement that trump was a creation of both political parties. Just seemed like a “this’ll stir shit up, heh heh” thing to say. I usually don’t reply to trolls at all, but I couldn’t help correcting their grammar without biting on their political statement, and following up with a mildly sarcastic “Welcome to our community” since the Discobot helpfully suggested I do so.
I was a bit dismayed that they were led into my “How is trump a viable candidate” thread and almost called them out as a troll then-- actually started typing a post here, but others were taking them seriously and they hadn’t gone full racist yet, so I thought maybe I was judging too harshly.
Just one data point, but this may be a stance of former devoted MAGAs who now have buyer’s remorse. My brother is one, and “both sides are equally bad, corrupt, etc.” is his go-to now. “Both parties are propping up senile crooks,” that kind of thing.
So, I’m not excusing it, but at least for some, it may be a baby step out of the dark side. It is infuriating, nonetheless.
Yeah that’s why I use the words ‘almost reasonable’. It’s wrong for a thousand different reasons but I could see somebody holding that viewpoint out of ignorance. They may just not be interested in politics at all and it’s another manifestation of the "all politicians are crooks’ hand wave that allows centrists to both sides an argument. Or as you say, maybe there’s some cognitive dissonance going on in their head where they know there are certain issues either with their own policy stances or with the leaders they support. These types of people may or may not be able to be educated out of these stances and truthfully, I’m fine with either one. But when you add that in with the blatant racism and thinly veiled advocating for genocide in the intolerance thread it becomes a lot to ignore.

His comments were clearly a hijack in the “Is Trump Confused?” thread, but I didn’t want to let his comments go unrebutted, so I pasted them into your thread, since the commentary (“democrats helped create Trump”) seemed to touch on your OP (how is Trump a viable candidate?).
I didn’t necessarily think that responding to the posts was going to change his mind, but I figure that there are (teeming) millions who may read these posts, without commenting, and so I didn’t want to leave nonsense out there without a retort.
But sorry for dirtying up your thread.
No problem, and no harm done, since @What_Exit sent the troll packing and cornfielded their crap. Now all that’s left of the troll in the thread are echoes from the replies of the good Dopers.

I have lurked on and off the board for almost 25 years. I was young when I found it, probably not more than 18 or 19. I consider this board’s general culture, and it’s infinite amount of arguments, debates, fights, and some of the most insightful conversation I have ever had the pleasure of reading to have shaped my general outlook on the world and on politics in particular. I have read many many threads that I did not participate in that absolutely challenged me, and influenced and changed my mind on many many subjects. When people say that there are lurkers out there reading what’s going on here and it is affecting them I am a concrete example that this is true.
I was not quite as taken by surprise as many people around me, family and friends both, by the rise of trump. And all of the insanity that ensued during his administration. And I have been able to explain to them why certain things have happened and what to pay attention to. And that is all because of what I have read here.
So yes, not feeding a troll is important, as you don’t want to encourage them. There is still virtue and not allowing complete BS to just hang around out there.
My experience is (as this latest example so aptly demonstrated) that someone spouting the above is most definitely NOT a “centrist.” A true centrist would totally reject Trump and vote for Biden without much hesitation at all. It’s just a lame attempt to shift ye olde Overton Window a few more pixels over to the right.
