Trolls R Us Resurrections

The only thread from negative-zero that I’ve seen (or briefly glanced at, to be more accurate) is the “relationship difficulties” one. His posts are fairly well written and the situation seems believable. The two things that strike me as odd are (a) using a message board for basic relationship advice like whether to break up or not, and (b) apparently then ignoring all the advice and continuing to whine.

Any new thread dedicated to point (a) is automatically suspicious because so many of them are newly joined attention-seeking trolls, but my take is that this a strange person with no support network struggling with an emotional decision. Or maybe I’ve been completely bamboozled by a better-than-average troll.

We’ve got a live one, Lickety (and that name already is a flag), a brand new poster whose first post is in the “How is Trump still a viable candidate” thread, who said the following:

Wikipedia is not a trustworthy site. The Wikimedia foundation and editors’ have garnished a reputation for obscuring sources, stretching the truth, and exercising extreme bias on topics which should be presented in a completely neutral state.

CNN and The Washington Post are not reliable sources of information. The mainstream media is known to repeatedly lie, spread false information from questionable sources and routinely perform smear campaigns against political/thought rivals.

I mean, how obvious can you be?

So they are basically saying they won’t accept any cites from sources that are widely accepted here as mainstream and accurate? Sources that make up well over half of the links here when talking about complex subjects or current events? Did they say what sources they would accept?

Yeah if I wanted to start something the first thing I would say here is “I won’t accept mainstream news sources for anything. When come back bring Fox.”

Probably sources that most or all of the rest of us here won’t accept.

Nope; @ParallelLines quoted their entire post.

That’s not the right way to garnish respect around here.

Okay. So it’s just a “Look at me” post. Got it. For that to be the totality of a first time poster sends up all kinds of red flags.

So, Lickety wishes to alert us to not believe anything we hear from Wikipedia, CNN, or the Washington Post, and to get all our information directly from Trump. Duly noted. I now see that Trump is being unfairly persecuted by a Biden-Soros conspiracy aided by Jewish space aliens from Pluto.

I know, right? A few sprigs of fresh herbs and some artfully strewn edible flowers would be far more acceptable.

Ha, I was contemplating making a joke with the other meaning, something along the lines of “on the contrary, I think that’s a great way to garnish respect”.

Now that I think of it, ‘garnish’ is one of those words that sort of have opposite meanings: “add to or embellish” or “to take away”, as in “garnished wages”.

The Post reference is a dead giveaway. Why not the NY Times?

Washington Post, so it should be Biden-Soros-Bezos.

That hate-on Trump has for Jeff Bezos is pathetic.

I’m sure we’ll soon see Lickety split.

Y’all being’ persnickety about Lickety.

Looks like we’ve got a live one in the Florence and the Machine Haters thread in CS.

And that thread had been quiet for a dozen years!

Good catch. They’ve only posted to that thread (12-year zombie), no others. Feels more like random internet dumbass than returning sock.

Could just be a Rush fan.

I’m not thinking troll or trock yet. Pretty benign so far.

They definitely do not like Florence and the Machine. Nor do they like the Smiths (or at least Morrisey). And they would like us to know that.

How does one even stumble upon a 12-year-old thread?

Google search for Florence and the Machine most likely.

Yeah, I can see someone encountering this band for the first time (possibly through the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack), thinking they suck, and Googling for other people who think they suck. He gets a hit, it’s not marked as closed or archived or anything, and so he posts.

Nor do I think this is likely to be trolling. If it were, he’d have picked someone more popular and/or current, like the Beatles or Taylor Swift.

Frankly, we need more people stumbling upon the board because they Googled for something. That’s a message board’s lifeblood.
