Say what? I see other posters (BlankSlate, ElmerJ Fudd) getting bent out of shape about the definition of rock, but not nonobaddog. I thought they were arguing to not worry about definitions and just include everything. I took the “Rock and Roll” versus “Fringe Trash” as more of a joke.

I do question this. Did people really setup accounts, years ago, to use for trolling purposes in the future? That is a concept I just can’t wrap my mind around. Like, “I want to be a dick, but a dick 10 years in the future. Let me setup an account just for that purpose”. I guess it happens, but it’s hard to believe the long game that people setup for such low reward/lols.

It seems to make no sense, if you think of it as a one-time thing. But, if you think of it as someone making dozens or more of them, and having been here for many years, making trocking a hobby, then there’s some sense to it.
Also, we have so many trocks get banned, but they only belong to a few people.
It’s so easy. All you need is a free throwaway email account, which takes a minute to set up, and then less than a minute to create an account here, and you’re done.
And they’re not being a dick 10 years in the future. They’re being a solid dick for 10 years straight with a ton of free, no effort sock accounts. They just don’t use them all up at once.
I remember taking on people with dozens of accounts on Wikipedia when I was an admin and sockpuppet investigator.

I think some trolls set up extra accounts for when their current one gets banned.
Some have done this for years.
Is it possible to lock off anyone that hasn’t posted in five to seven years, where they would have to email the mods to give a reason as to what happened?
I don’t think it’s a good idea to discourage people from returning to the board.
Honestly, if I was someone who took a long break from the board, felt nostalgic, and came back to say hello, and was blocked from doing so without jumping through hoops, I’d say “fuck that” and not bother. Especially if asked to explain yourself, as if you are being accused of doing something wrong by not posting in a while. That seems like a board who does not want you back.
Meanwhile, malcontents wanting to cause trouble might be more motivated to do this. They’d get a list of ready excuses ahead of time each time they’d do it.
I took an Internet break for a couple of months after the 2016 election, and simply didn’t return here. I decided to pop my head back in a couple of years ago and found it interesting enough to stay.
If I had needed to take the extra step of messaging a mod, I very likely would not have bothered.
That probably wouldn’t have been any great loss to the board, but I suspect there are plenty of others who feel the same.
Yes, some years back I stopped coming around for, oh, several years, anyway. Then poked my nose back in and decided to get active again.
