Does anyone else find this? You stand up and the trousers fit great, but when you sit down and your stomach compresses, they become really tight.
It’s more than the stomach. The butt spreads on the chair, and takes up slack in the top of the trouser.
Sounds like you need to find a pant style with a greater “rise” measurement. That’s the distance from the crotch seam to the back of the trouser.
Typically with ladies’ damnable pant design using an elastic waistband, the victim sits down, and the back of the pant slides down to expose most of the backside.

In the UK pants don’t have rise measurements. They have length and width. If I go up a width the trousers fit better when I sit down, but worse when I stand up.
Standard sizes (whether the UK or US or anywhere) are based on an AVERAGE. If your body isn’t shaped in a standard fashion, you will have to either accept a bad fit in one way or another (standing versus sitting, in your case), or you get your clothing tailor-made.
The “rise” section in a pattern can be cut higher by a tailor, and made to fit your backside.

Thanks. I will just go a size up and stick to a belt.
