Yeah, it played out a little differently in the book. What she did in the show is dumb and she would have known better had she taken 2 seconds to think about it.
But she’s not really a teenager, right? Have they said how old she actually is?
I liked this exchange between Jason and Andy in the jail:
Andy: What the hell, Stackhouse? You ain’t supposed to be back here!
Jason: Well, I’m just… sweepin’.
Andy: Yeah? Where’s your broom?
Jason: That’s a good point.
I thought Eric said Godric was the oldest one. FYI, the Wikipedia article on the characters says that Eric said, “there are none above him in the New World.”
Interesting. That would be something to ask on TWOP if only I could stand to read more than a few posts from those twats. Their breadth of knowledge is impressive but their obsession is bordering on insane.
But what specific powers do fairies have? I thought I read somewhere that mind reading wasn’t actually a fairy power, and indicated that Sookie was more than just a fairy.
Yeah he said that right after the whole “he is twice the vampire” thing. I can definitely see where someone would interpret that as him being the oldest, but in the context I really just figured he meant that he was the best and probably because he was his maker. The conversation was with Bill when Bill wanted to know why Eric was going to so much trouble for “just a sheriff” and Eric was telling him why he could be King if he wanted.
Plus, what Eric says I just go with because he is HOT.
If you’re sure you don’t mind being spoiled… (spoilers for 2 short stories post-book 4, books 5-8, and a story set between books 8 & 9)
You’re right, being a mind-reader isn’t a fairy power, but it’s something that a few of the mostly-human members of Sookie’s family can do. They introduce another mind reader she had no idea existed in book eight, Hunter, a four-year-old first cousin once removed. At least one of the fairies remarks that they’re not sure why Sookie and Hunter can read minds, since it isn’t one of their gifts.
Anyway, fairies attract vampires and other supernatural beings, but especially vamps - Eric refers to them as “vampire catnip” because they make vamps very happy when they’re around. It doesn’t work out well for the poor fairies, though… Actually, they attract humans too, which is the only fairy “power” that Jason has ever displayed.
Besides being very sexually appealing to others, fairies are immune to the glamors of both vamps and maenads - though you know from last season the show took liberties with that regarding Jason.
From a story post-book 8 it’s clear that some fairies can also change their appearances, not just make people believe things, and Sookie is not able to see through that any more than other people.
Some fairies are also able to key in on people they care about, and quite literally act as their fairy godparent to save them from danger. Only one of the many fairies in the series has this gift, though, just as not all vampires can fly etc.
Faries can travel between here in the mundane world, and where they came from. Some chose to live here, but most would rather be away from us. Considering how the vampires react to them, it’s hard to blame them.
Luckily for Sookie and Jason, they didn’t inherit the two fairy weaknesses that can kill them - iron and lemon juice. The fairy who tried to talk Sookie into going with her lost a triplet sister to lemon juice.
The faries play a big role after book 8 too, but the powers are pretty much established by book 8.
That quote implies that no vampire in the new world is more powerful than Godric. And given that Eric is about 1,000 years old, it establishes Godric as 2,000 years old. I think it’s a continuity error now that we’re hearing how old Russell is.
They talk as if it is. I’ve always wondered if that’s true though. would a 3000 year old vamp in the body of a toddler really be as strong as a 2000 year old adult?
It also keys in on the power that is given them by the others- reference Russel’s continued fight against the “othorities” and his comments about the magister - “only because we let them” - so, wether Godrick was more physically poweful we won’t know - but clearly there is more to it than just age.
They’re clear that vamps get more powerful as they get older. But that doesn’t necessarily translate into a direct correlation of age and power.
Godric was something even when he was human, so even at a year old, he would have been more powerful than, say, Eddie Gauthier was. (An extreme example, as Eddie’s kind of incompetent even as newbies go.)
Similarly, if Eddie had somehow managed to live to be 2000 years old, he still wouldn’t have been as powerful as Godric was when he ended. Hell, if he’d managed to make it to 2000, he still might not even have been a match for 1000 year old Eric. (Ignoring, of course, the fact that Eric would be 3000 at this point, of course.)
When Bill was barely smoking in the sunlight I remembered a continuity error from the first couple seasons. At the end of season 1, Bill charged out into daylight to save Sookie in the graveyard, eventually collapsing in a smouldering heap. Much time passed before they got him buried, and the takeaway seemd to be that sunlight is not fatal to vampires. I think Bill even commented about it afterward, about how his life was never in danger, it just hurt a lot.
Then in season 2, Godric, the 2000 year old vampire, committed suicide by subjecting himself to direct sunlight for, oh, around 90 seconds. Huh?
OTOH, one nice touch of continuity I thought they were going for was when Bill was passed out after killing Lorena. I thought this was a nod to what we learned in season 2 in the hotel room, how vampires can’t stay awake when the sun rises; they pass out cold and can’t be revived. Not sure if that’s what they were going for, but I hope so. The alternative is that he went directly from actively fighting his healthy maker to coma. If so, that was pretty abrupt.
Evan Rachel Wood is terrible in True Blood but has been excellent in other things. True Blood for her is like Star Wars for Natalie Portman.
