So Bill is a king now?
And Tara is a lesbian cage fighter named Tony now?
And Lafayette has a mohawk?

I liked this episode, some very interesting changes. My favorite part, where I laughed out loud, was Pam, wearing a tweedy Chanel suit, doing a commercial (?) for Fangtasia with that deadpan voice, dripping with contempt. “Fangtasia - for vampires and humans. Men and Women. Families. Pets.” That’s what the place needs - a kiddy playground and a Bring Your Dog night.
It was good, but a bit meh. But ‘meh’ only because it was the first episode and they had a lot of stuff to get us up to speed on. Reminding us of who all the characters are* and what was going on with them and setting the stage for the rest of the season.
Also, I don’t see Grandaddy Earl listed on IMDB, he looked familiar, is he someone?
*Things like
-Oh yeah, Bill and Eric can sense Sookie’s presence
-Oh yeah, Jason’s a cop
-Oh yeah, Andy, forgot about him.
-Oh yeah, Tara, ‘what she went through’
-Oh yeah, that baby is half Rene, did Terry every find out about—yup he did
and so on.
Grandad was Gary Cole. You may remember him as Lumbergh from Office Space. he also did a spot on Mike Brady in the Brady Bunch movies.
He’s actually a really good actor who can do both comic and dramatic roles (he’s played a few heavies). He’s one of those guys you see in a lot of things, but may not know his name.
That’s it. He’s one I always recognize but can never place since he always plays such different characters. I believe the last thing I saw him in was Desperate Housewives.
I did like Sookie’s “Oh Shit” face when she realized that everyone can hear her when she’s hanging out with a giant group of fairies (except Jason, Jason’s a fairy that can’t communicate telepathically).
Any thoughts on what the Hot Shot guys are planning to do with Jason (as the rerun is playing in the background while I type this).
Jason did get the sexual magnetism, though, so he’s got that going for him, which is nice.
Yes, and IIRC, he can use that power to manipulate people, but I don’t remember if he’s done that or not yet. Something about him not being smart enough to figure out how to work his power, or know that he has it or something like that.
I don’t know what was going on in that fairy world, but the fruit they were eating reminded me of the lotus-eaters of myth.
As far as I can tell, Bill took over as king from Russell, not Sophie-Anne.
They looked a lot like hearts.
I liked this. Seems like the writers are getting this series back on track. Most of the changes work well. Bill is King. Jason is actually a pretty good cop. Tara changed her name and is on the road as a female UFC fighter. Tommy is adopted by Hoyt’s mom.
Best line, from Lafayette, of course: “…those *Deliverence *extras at Hot Shot.”
It was a little slow as an episode, but they were setting things up. I think it still looks on track. I kind of like seeing Jason coming into his own as a mature, responsible person. We’ve always known that he had a good heart, and now we’re seeing that he might be a pretty good cop as well. He’s a guy that’s always wanted to take care of people and now he’s doing it.
The witch coven story line isn’t doing much for me, though, and we haven’t yet seen a unifying arc for the season (which has previously consisted of a villain posing a common threat), but it was still kind of nice just to be back in Bon Temps with these characters. If nothing else, it’s something to fill the hole after Game of Thrones.
I couldn’t tell if he was adopted by her or her new boy-toy. Either way, they deserve each other. I wonder if he at least had to give the money back to Sam.
Jessica needs some time-out time. Bill’s been an overly permissive “cool” dad.
I liked that Sookie had been away for a year- gives them a chance to resolve some plot threads. I’d have made it 2 years to explain the characters aging 4 years in the last few months that passed in Bon Temps since the first episode.
I’ve only read the first couple of books but I do remember that Sam made contact with other shifters in the first one. I was glad to see them bring them into play in this one.
I knew the actress who played Marnie (the “this is a dead parrot… again!” witch) looked familiar; it’s Fiona Shaw, Aunt Petunia from the Harry Potter films.
The “escape from Fairyland” sequence was easily the most frightening thing I’ve seen in the series so far— because it looked so cheesy (seriously, like “Sid & Marty Krofft” cheesy) that I thought I was watching a nuclear-grade shark jumping of the most horrible and embarrassing kind, in the first 10 minutes of the first damned episode of the season.
Thankfully, it got better from there… but man, that was scary.
(And what’s with AP getting all coy and covering her boobs now? This does not bode well.)
I wasn’t thinking literally adopted, but maybe… The boy toy thing is just too creepy to think about. Give me crazy fairies, witches and werewolves, but those two in bed together?
Weak. It kind of jumped all over the place in a somewhat jarring fashion. The whole scene where the woman walks into the mansion only to reveal Bill as a king was unnecessary. It should have been handled another way - probably in the scene where Bill and Eric are outside Sookie’s house and Bill orders Eric away.
The Fairie scene looked like crap. The AFTER part, not the ephemeral BEFORE part. WHY would Hoyt’s mother take in Tommy? Jason is a competent cop? Tara became a lesbian MMA fighter? Half of this episode was a big honkin’ WTF sandwich. It’s like everyone should be sporting Van Dykes.
I thought it was pretty lame. We were on the verge of a major vampire/human conflict as last season ended which promised to be more interesting than any of the more silly plotlines the show is running (NAZI WEREWOLVES!!!), and then we jumped forward a year and apparently we’re on vampires doing PSAs.
I’ve always found the aspect of the show where they attempt to portray how humans would react in the real world to the presence of supernatural creatures - but the show rarely focuses on that but instead on misc. new supernaturals of the week melodramatic plotlines. I thought the end of season 3 would finally set in motion some actual plot revolving around the human/vampire integration and conflict, and bloop - we’re past all that into meeting some group of witches and visiting the inbred rednecks of hot shot.
Not a promising start.
I shouldn’t post while cooking breakfast. Replace “ephemeral” with “ethereal”.
This is the first episode I can contribute to! We didn’t get HBO until a few months ago so we were always a year behind on the DVDs. We literally just finished up season 3 an hour before watching season 4.
So…yeah. Just thought I’d share. I haven’t had my coffee this morning so I really don’t have much to say about the episode. Carry on.
This is exactly what I thought! In fact, when my husband came upstairs to ask how it was, I basically said, “well the first ten minutes was like a really bad Star Trek fight scene, but otherwise, OK.” For that entire 10 minute sequence I was having a very uncomfortable, “jumping the shark,” sensation in the pit of my stomach. Glad it got better after that.
However… I am not sure I am liking where they are going with the Eric, Bill, Sookie love triangle. Last season, Bill’s make-up and hair were awful, and he looked awful, while Eric was looking rosier and more dapper with each episode. Looks like the tables have turned. Bill has a new haircut, and a tan complextion, while the make-up artists have applied about of pound of white cement to Eric’s face. I am interested to see what this means and where this all goes. But as an avid S/E shipper, I am not sure how much I am going to enjoy the degradation of my viking vampire’s character, which I suspect is going to happen.
