Truisms and Neo-Truisms

I’m a fan of truisms. I like their neatness. I once started a thread about truisms in pop songs:

Anyway, I heard a quote the other day that I really liked:

“Behind every great fortune is a crime” - It’s really a neo-truism depending on how you define “crime”. This was Carlos Slim, the Mexican billionaire, paraphrasing Balzac.

I’d love to hear more.

My father, a doctor, always said that it’s better to be lucky than good.

Artist Jenny Holzer has a series of public art titled “Truisms”. They’re often found displayed in public spaces like billboards and bus stations, but here they are mixed in with some of her other series. They’re supposed to be common beliefs she’s collected, IIRC – she’s not the “speaker,” and many contradict each other.

I read this truism today (from Francois de La Rochefoucauld): “The only true security is courage.” I like that.
