Predicated on the notion that a Romney 2012 victory prevents Trump 2016 from ever getting off the ground, or at least prevents him from winning. We would not, in short, be in our current predicament.
Romney never set my heart on fire, but he seemed like a decent fellow. I voted for him. But he had to be defeated, apparently, because (back then) he was Hitler 2.0.
And a lot of the folks who danced on his political grave then are dejected now. So what say you?
My word, yes. Romney was an excellent candidate and would have been a much superior President. And he would have won re-election by a rather easy margin. Then Ryan as President in 2020.
Ok, first of all, who said anything about Clinton? She couldn’t beat Donald Trump, you think she would beat incumbent Mitt Romney? All things being equal, I think not.
Though of course, all things aren’t equal. You can sketch out whatever kind of scenario you like. Romney wins a squeaker in 2012, the Dems hold the senate. Probably keep it in 2014.
In that case, the sequence certainly wouldn’t end with Clinton, as she’d have to go through a primary rematch with Obama she would be sure to lose again.
I wasn’t sure if your scenario simply changed the 2012 results and kept everything else or we were tasked to purely speculate on what happens after 2012. So if the choice is 2 Obamas and a Trump vs. 1 Obama vs. 2 Romneys, I’d go with the former.
I was just thinking about this myself. I assume Obama-Romney-Romney.
This really depends on how much Trump can do. I’m leaning towards yes.
Your characterization of the criticisms of Romney as Hitler 2.0 are unfounded. Yeah, I preferred Obama, but I never hated Romney. I just prefer Dem policies. Same with McCain until he picked Palin. Trump’s different.
I would retroactively change the 2012 results to give President Obama 538 EV, the Democratic Party 435 seats in the HoR, a Democratic majority in the Senate of 61-47-2, and impetus to disband the Republican Party.
No, but ask me again when Trump has proven himself to be a bad president.
My first instinct, though, is to say that I’d rather keep the four years of Obama the Good President we did have over four or eight years of Romney the Not So Bad.
I’m not thrilled that Trump has been elected, but upon further reflection, I’m very mildly optimistic. One of the things I was dreading about a Hillary Clinton Presidency was continued Republican Obstructionism. Hopefully, having Republican control of both House and Senate and President will allow Things to Be Done (even if some of the things aren’t the things I’d prefer), but there will be enough Republicans who don’t automatically think that everything Trump wants he should get to limit his ability to be a Loose Cannon and Destroy the World as I Know it.
No, regardless of Mr. Romney’s decency he advocated economic policies that would have strangled the Obama recovery, anemic though it may have been, in its infancy. We would have been plunged back into recession. But cheer up, that could still happen under Trump.
I have a feeling that given Brexit and the mood in America for major change, Trump probably would have run this year and beaten Romney. It depends on whether Romney would have governed from the center or not. It also would have depended on whether there had been gridlock in Washington during Romney’s term. If so, I think Trump would have smashed him
I wouldn’t be surprised if I change my mind in the future, though. As much as I distaste Trump, and am frightened at the implications of his impulsive behavior at the helm of state, he’s a fucking wildcard. I honestly have no idea how this is going to turn out.
Romney was occasionally an odd duck, shall we say. Definitely out of touch. Would I rather have Romney versus Trump - oh hells yes. I’ll trade you 1 Obama term for 1 Romney term.
