Don’t underestimate Vance’s ability to shapeshift - his current orange god has forgiven him for his old damning utterances and the MAGAts seem to have no memory of those now.
Those old kids could be forgotten in a hot minute and the new ‘pureblood’ kids of the widow Kirk taken on as if they were his own.
No, he is not. He actually does discuss the difference not only in this video but others. I am not, however, going to tell anyone they have to watch any other videos, just that he has a whole series on them.
The most solid evidence for cancer risk in sunburn is blistering sunburns and tanning, which is the body’s response to UV radiation exposure beyond the skin’s default tolerances. Not mild sunburns. I’m not advocating anyone deliberately burn themselves, especially when such things can be avoided, but this notion that even the mildest burn is going to elevate skin cancer risk is something that should be examined. It’s based, again, on the “no safe limit” model of radiation.
One of the biggest risk factors for any cancer is simply advancing age, a risk factor we all have. It is entirely possible to get skin cancer on skin that is never exposed to sunlight. There are a LOT of genetic factors that affect ones risk, beyond just how light or dark your skin might be. Saying skin cancer is all about UV exposure is like assuming all lung cancers are related to smoking - they aren’t.
Yes. I am aware of that. In fact, my initial post on the subject shows that, and I based it upon my own medical records indicating radiation exposure which, in my case, is being tracked.
Let’s view that from another side - they typical dental x-ray is 0.005 mSv. The typical banana gives you a dose of 0.1 mSv. So eating one banana is the equivalent of 20 dental x-rays. OMG! OMG! Is anyone suggesting we avoid bananas due to their inherent radiation? How many bananas did you eat last year? (Actually, it’s a testament to how little radiation is needed for an x-ray these days).
Let’s look at this another way. The average person in the US is exposed to around 5-6 mSv in background radiation every year. Those in Denver, CO get around 10 mSv per year… but there’s not a corresponding jump in cancer rates in Denver. Which is pointed out in the linked video - there are cities on Earth where the background radiation dose is the equivalent of everyone living there getting a dozen chest x-rays or even CT scansevery single year* but without the corresponding expected cancer rates current risk charts would expect you to believe.
If the observed real-world data doesn’t match the theory it’s time to re-examine the theory.
There does seem to be a disconnect between expected risks and actual real-world data on the lower end of the exposure chart. That doesn’t mean one should get blistering sun burns deliberately or purposely expose oneself to ionizing radiation, it does mean that the risks involved may be different than supposed. Science is supposed to ask questions and re-visit topics, not assume our knowledge is settled for all time.
Even if it turns out that there IS a safe lower threshold for radiation exposure (which is not proven, either) that’s not an excuse to expose people to more of it without reason.
Maybe the risk doesn’t increase on a nice, neat slope, maybe it curves upward at some point. The study of radiation is still relatively young, it’s been plagued by fears and misconceptions, and there’s no reason not to revisit prior assumptions.
Anecdotal: my father died of lung cancer. Never smoked in his life. It is a fucking horrible way to go, people. It got to the point where he needed supplemental oxygen, and a bed where his head was lower than his chest to allow fluid to drain from his lungs (pneumonia).
It’s complicated. There are three different types of skin cancer. Melanoma is mostly associated with having experienced bad sunburns, especially early in life.
For squamous-cell skin cancers, total exposure, irrespective of when it occurs, is more important.[4
Badass cell skin cancer is the most common, and what causes it isn’t well understood, but “sunlight is a factor in about two-thirds of these cancers” (also from Wikipedia).
All three are more common in people with compromised immune systems, because the immune system kills a lot of pre-cancerous cells.
“Cancer”, isn’t a single disease, it’s a range of diseases, each with different causes. There’s no doubt that overall, “radiation increases the risk of cancer”, but the shape of the relationship curve between dose of radiation and increase of risk is almost certainly different for different cancers.
But on a very macro level, the risk of low doses of radiation to elderly people is extremely small. Medical doses of radiation are comparable to the dose you get from an airplane flight (or a banana), it’s not something that you want to do just to kill time, but you don’t need some huge compelling reason for it to be worth doing. “I’m curious” can be an adequate reason. (Especially if no one cares about the monetary cost, which is true for the president.)
[Emily Litella] " What’s all of this talk about President Trump being immortal? Sure, he’s violated women his whole life, stolen from everyone with a pulse, demeaned those who do not bow before him and desecrated our nation. But immortal !? "
According to Google’s AI overview, “their ability to form a tough, self-renewing barrier that constantly defends the body against a multitude of threats, including pathogens, physical injury, UV radiation, and water loss”, is what makes skin cells so bad ass.
…I deleted yugely comment on senility test for that reason!! (Every digressing person should count back from 100 by 7s!! and then recall the 3 words this was part of my docs cognitive exam)
How can trump be so unintelligle sometimes, going on and on…and then just “sharp” during other times? Is this a high low sundowning kind of thing? Or is this just how cunning cult leaders work…
And now everyone too fearful to actually call him on it?
My dog was the same way. Most of the time he was just tired and rested, sometimes he was lucid and it was like having my dog back, but other times he didn’t know where he was and would get lost in the corner of the living room.
My father (who is 91) has been dealing with memory issues for years, and now may be developing dementia. This is exactly what it’s like with him: he can be absolutely lucid and sharp for a while, and then, ten minutes later, he gets confused about how the zipper on his sweatshirt works, and can’t remember a guy with whom he’s been friends for decades.
There is a unit confusion here. A standard dental x-ray is 0.005 mSv (milli) and a banana is 0.1 μSv (micro), so a banana is 0.0001 mSv.
Melanoma rates in Colorado are higher than average, but overall cancer rates are lower due to the also lower than average age, higher than average physical activity rates, and lowest obesity rates of any state.
Still not sure what this has to do with Trump dying, other than cuts to Medicaid and higher ACA premiums will lead to fewer people getting their cancer diagnosed early, and thus more cancer deaths.
Sheesh. I come here to hear hopeful news about Trump showing signs of kicking off, and instead I get debates about radiation dosages and cell repair mechanisms.
