But I really do believe that a lot of people believe that the “father/brother/husband will whip his ass” model works, and even if they don’t articulate it to himself, this logic underlays it. It’s why it’s okay to harass “those” women, the ones no man is willing to protect.

Hmm, I’ve generally interpreted that as the “women are property” theory. You should respect the man and his wife, sister, daughter. But if you come upon an unowned woman you aren’t constrained by being civil to her owner.

I guarantee you that the people who are downplaying Trump’s assaults are the same sort of folk who would take the law into their own hands if anyone tried it with their daughters, wives, or sisters. My theory explains why these men so often seem to resent women who don’t meet conventional standards of attractiveness or otherwise are unappealing (introverted or whatever): that’s how women are supposed to protect themselves, and if you aren’t capable of that, you’re unworthy of protection.
