It’s pretty fascinating how so many people seem to simultaneously think that (A) political correctness is a menace to free speech and (B) NFL players must express proper thoughts or be fired.
And this is where the defining feature of American “conservatism” (I won’t insult true conservatives by calling it conservatism without the quotes, which once existed not that long ago) – a core characteristic of American “conservatism” is the tandem of race and religion. It’s an ideology premised on tribalism and racism. They don’t necessarily have a problem with collectivism in America, but it has to be a collectivism that places whites at the top of the food chain. Proof of this is in the fact that these people had more reverence for Vladimir Putin than for Barack Obama, which is partly why they are dismissive of the Russian investigation. Putin saved white America from what they perceive as the disease of an inclusive and diverse America.
There seems to be some kind of mental block on the left about this topic. Of COURSE I think there’s a problem with kneeling/protesting during Taps - it is hugely disrespectful. Time and place. Why do you think that that opinion cannot coexist with the opinion that the kneeler has the right to express his? The free speech can be and often is distasteful, you know.

Liberals don’t give a damn whether you (or anyone else) stands, kneels, sits, gets a beer, or whatever else they CHOOSE to do during the playing of the anthem.
The objection is to forced displays of "respect. " Coerced patriotism is in opposition to everything I believe about America.
And you want to stop that free speech.
I want people to stand during the playing of the anthem, yes. I also want people to be polite, well-groomed, well-mannered, smart, considerate, etc. etc. Does that mean I don’t think they have the right not to be any of those things? Or that I want to “stop” people from being rude, slovenly, obnoxious, stupid, selfish, etc?
And the football players want the police to stop disproportionately shooting black men. I know which of the two aims I’d prioritize.
