Trump Really is Stupid

N/M

I used to take comfort in the thought that even if my candidate did not win, a stupid man really could never be elected president. That notion wavered somewhat with Bush Jr., and since 2016 it’s been completely shattered.

As the analysts were saying shortly after the election was over, the fact that he won said (says) a lot about the country as a whole; it was largely an inner America backlash against the rim, sheltered conservatives insisting on more shelter versus border/out rim populations who were comfortable with and even desirous of variety, progress, and change. Trump’s win was a symptom of the greater culture war.
And President Rump’s entire* term in office has been a symptom, much like the current protests and media attention, of that clash between progressive and regressive cultures.

The fact of the matter is that people in power wanted this guy to be their figurehead. The fact of the matter is that the majority of voters who voted and had their votes counted wanted this guy to be the answer to the previous administration.

It’s tempting to throw out the stock phrase “that’s scary” but, as a student/scholar of social movements and protest activities (what sociologists lump into the bucket of Collective Behavior) I have to say this latest development in history is really not a surprise. Scholars at the level of Neil Smelser or Clark McPhail would probably have been able to predict this coming based on trends in the 1960’s except that the discipline tends to eschew making predictions like some kind of a Nostradamus or Edgar Cayce.

*Okay, so before someone requests citation of an exhaustive history from minute 1, I’ll confirm that this is a hyperbolic statement.

Bullshit. Three million plus times bullshit.

Those who voted for him didn’t think he would win, the same way those who voted for Brexit didn’t think it would pass. Frankly, Trump didn’t think he would win.

And don’t forget that bit about “people in power wanted Trump as figurehead” is also nonsense.

This; he lost the popular vote. He got in anyway because America* isn’t a real democracy.*

Um, wha?

OK, timeout. You really think Trump got more votes? A yes or no would suffice with this one.

It’s a sociology term. An “out rim population” is one that “shits in each other’s mouths” (definition here

(Sorry, Grestarian — I, too, sometimes use jargon here from my own academic field, and occasionally forget to define terms. IMHO, you made some cogent points.)

I read the thread title as “Trump Really is Stoid”, which would explain a lot.:smack:

That’s the best conspiracy theory I’ve got so far today. Although the one about 5G equipment being stamped “Cov-19” is pretty darn scary too.

I feel your pain. For the first time in my life I will be voting for the Democratic candidate for President* and I won’t even be holding my nose while I do it. Yeah, Biden is a boring old grampaw but a b.o.g. is looking pretty good about now.

*Not that I ever voted for the Republican candidate either.

Thank you for voting for the Democrat in Arizona!

Fittingly described as a Kakistocracy.
