My wife went to USC (Gamecocks, not that west coast school) during the 1980s. The athletes had their own dorm and dining hall. They ate a lot of steak, courtesy of the boosters.
Now I doubt that the IPTAY crowd were going to be outdone by their main rivals, so I’m guessing that the Clemson football team ate at least as well, and still does. So my WAG is that lukewarm fast food berders is a step down from their everyday eats.
My friends tend to be the definition of socially awkward, but precisely because of that would never serve McD takeout. Chinese, Indian, italian… yes. But not stuff that you need to eat between “oh shit it burns” and “you sure this ain’t rubber?”

Forget whether burgers per se were tacky. He couldn’t have hired a crew to grill burgers on the spot, so they could have been served hot, thick, and juicy? And with trays of fresh lettuce, sliced tomato, pickles, onions, and condiments so that everyone could have fixed their burger the way they wanted, rather than just having to take it however it came out of the box??
