Here is your explanation: he’s a deeply stupid man who believes his own press releases. He really does believe he’s converting massive numbers of black voters, he believes “the blacks love me”, he’s been to so many scripted events that he forgot what it’s like to face unfriendly interviewers in front of an unfriendly audience. He probably thought that since they’re not white, he’d easily run rings around them.
And boy howdy did it show. He played his biggest hits from the 2012-2016 era. It landed horribly, audience mocked him openly. He’s got no way to go to a rally and lick his wounds without going off on some big racist tirade.
When you hear hoofbeats, think zebras not horses. Trump walked in front of a bunch of Black people and said a bunch of dumb racist stuff because he’s a stupid man with no fresh material.

Y’know, it just hit me… could this in part be Trump trying, foolishly, to pull on Harris his old Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” schtick … except that nobody questions that Harris IS of Black and (Asian) Indian descent.
So he tries to do it in the form of Concern Trolling about whether or not she picks and sticks with the identity of the community.
Now, sure, Donald Trump is absolutely the wrong person do the “JAQ” game about Black identity. But his “advisors” probably are the kind of people who would engage in “gatekeeping” about who is “really” Black American.
Then, either please give us a link to that thread, or stop citing them. Making an argument, and assuming that others will take the time to go hunting through your other posts in other threads to find what you wish to cite, is disingenuous, at best.

It is but people do question who is “black”. They think she is generic black, but will she still look out for the interests of Black Americans since she can be confused either way.
It’s always been like this in the US as the book points out.
I’d guess that his advisors are really tuned in to social media, especially on YouTube. They are hammering Harris and that is the 18-35 demo.

Either way, putting the racist material in front of a mostly progressive Black audience guarantees maximum attention. That part isn’t stupid. He has to take the spotlight away from Harris, and this generated above the fold headlines.
Could it be that Trump has finally gone too far, and now is a defective horse rather than a clever political zebra? Um, well, given that he won after the Obama birth certificate thing — it seems unlikely. But I hope I am proven wrong.

It went so well Trump’s team decided to end the interview 25 minutes early.
I can’t imagine him gaining even one vote for every person he motivates to vote against him. I just can’t see this being anything but a net loss for Trump. He’s not going to gain more racists votes from this, he’s likely to lose some of the black votes he did have, and I bet this only serves to motivate more people to vote against him.
I gave up on thinking anything Trump says can end his political career back in 2016. As bad as I think this is for Trump, I sure can’t point to it as say for sure it’ll knock him out of the race.

Trump complained that he was invited under “false pretenses” because Harris wasn’t there. This was no 4D-chess “I’ll insult the black people and my fans will eat it up” move. This was his standard egotism falling apart the second he was questioned. He fully expected them to shower him with praise about how he’s done more for “the blacks” than anyone ever and when that didn’t happen he threw a tantrum.
You mean she wasn’t there. Trump was probably told (truthfully) that both were invited, but Harris clearly wasn’t able to make it for whatever reason.
