Because releasing it lent credibility to the birthers.
There was a birth announcement in a Honolulu paper and a press release from the Hawaii state registrar. The question of his birthplace had been resolved to the satisfaction of everyone who mattered months earlier.
Apparently the answer is college transcripts. And after that it would be something else. And something else. You act like releasing his birth certificate would have put an end to things, but it didn’t. There will always be some next thing that the doubters will cite as proof that he’s trying to conceal things.
Why do you think there were people clamoring for Obama’s birth certificate, but not for John McCain’s? Did you want to see McCain’s birth certificate; do you even know what state he was born in?
He didn’t wait; he released it in 2008. That shut down the discussion about it for anyone actually interested in evidence and proof – there was no evidence otherwise and no rational reason to suspect that he wasn’t born in Hawaii.
I was thinking about being snarky about this, but then, I don’t really know … but I don’t recall any clamoring for any president’s college transcripts before Obama’s. I recall some harsh critique of transcripts that had already been made public, but were there really any movements to demand Palin (as mentioned above) or Bush or any other president to release his college transcripts to prove he isn’t hiding anything?
I already know they answer to that re: birth certificates.
Obama released his birth certificate on June 12, 2008. This was not good enough. There were cries of “You can tell it’s 'shopped because of the pixels” and other insane conspiracy theories. This bullshit went on and on, until Obama went to extreme lengths and in April of 2011 requested his long form certificate from authorities in Hawaii. And once again, surprise THIS WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH for the lunatics.
I’m sure there are idiots out there who want to see Obama’s college transcripts. THEY WILL NOT BE GOOD ENOUGH. There will be conspiracy theories about how they were forged. Next will be a certificate that proves he is not a shape-shifting lizard person. And one that shows he is the actual father of his children. And a DNA test to show he’s a human. BUT THEY WON’T BE GOOD ENOUGH.
Really? I remember that quite a bit in terms of Bush. They were leaked to The New Yorker after a barrage of ‘he’s an idiot’ ‘a c student’ themes from the Democrats.
Don’t know where you were or why you don’t remember that.
That was the state record document which isn’t released to individuals (except in extraordinary circumstances). He released the version the state releases to individuals very promptly in 2008.
At that point, along with the newspaper announcements and all the statements of Hawaii state officials, there was utterly zero evidence he was born anywhere else, and a mountain of proof he was born in Hawaii, and no legitimate reason whatsoever to be interested in further proof of his birthplace.
He met the requirement in 2008 when he released his birth certificate. Only people not actually looking for evidence or proof continued to be interested after that.
Up until Obama? There did not seem to be a question, as long as it was(as with Obama) FREAKIN’ OBVIOUS. But as soon as Obama showed up… What happened in the past seemed for some reason not to count.
So he did the unprecedented… And published his birth certificate. BUT IT WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. He did this in 2008. Do you understand this? Obama showed the public his birth certificate.
IN 2008 for God’s sake. When no president in history had EVER BEEN ASKED TO DO THIS.
Yeah, like I said, harsh critiques of transcripts that had already been released; leaked, if you prefer. Who was screaming about, “Why won’t Palin/Bush/Clinton/Reagan/Kennedy/Arthur/Adams/Etc release their college transcripts? What is he hiding?”
Why don’t you post your long form birth certificate somewhere we can see it. It should be a non-extreme process for you to go through, right? Days, maybe.
He did do it immediately. Your information is wrong. He released the only birth certificate that the state of Hawaii gives to individuals in 2008. Along with all the other evidence, that was more than enough proof to “kill the controversy in its infancy”. There was no evidence to the contrary. None at all.
And yet it continued. And continued long past the 2011 non-standard release of the state record form. Which just goes to show that those interested in this conspiracy theory weren’t actually interested in evidence or proof – only in maligning and casting doubt on the president.
He did. It didn’t work because of the racist moron factor. And as it’s been pointed out: HE DIDN’T HAVE CONTROL OF THE LONG FORM TO BEGIN WITH. HE COULDN’T RELEASE IT HIMSELF, THAT WAS THE STATE OF HAWAII.
