Trump vs Clinton in the General Election

You know people who use the term “squares”? Golly gee whiz!

Yep, generally they’re considered to be from squaresville, Daddy-o.

Having said that, I’m sure most of the board would thank you to stop using wholesome Ozzie & Harriet-style terms like ‘golly, gee whiz’. Wholesome is hated 'round these parts.

Not really, especially as (a) Obama’s two elections were “close” in terms of popular vote, and (b) I don’t think this one is as close as it seems, as there are a lot of undecideds/others, and I have a feeling those will all end up going to Clinton.

It reminded me of the 1998 California Senate race, where Boxer was a couple of points behind in most polls, but neither candidate had 50% support, and in the end, pretty much all of the “missing” voters went for Boxer.

How can you stand it, what with them mocking people who believe sex should be private and drug use is not a good idea?

69? 68? How close am I? Or is your nostalgia for the 1950’s really not based on personal experience?

You wouldn’t make sweeping generalizations without some evidence to support your world view; anecdotes about extremist behavior does not suffice.

Did I go 4 for 4?

I employ a lost art called coping. Coping is considered a dirty word these days but to those of us who realize the world will never be perfect (i.e., adults) it’s a handy skill to have.

Yep, but not for the reason you think. You’re wrong due to your attempt to gloss over your previous lack of reading comprehension by bringing yet more mockage. Not very kosher really, but one comes to expect that around here.

Upon reflection…

Maybe I can appeal to your better nature. You know how it frustrates and annoys you to no end when people refer to the 1950s as some backwards, bitter, racist time when everything was shit? And for every Emmett Till you can think of lots of personal examples of good, hard working, happy people all working together seamlessly.

Well, I feel that way about modern America. So for every anecdote about its decadence or depravity, I see examples of good, honest, hard working people, of all stripes, raising their kids and living their lives. And as a 38 year father of a 3 year old, I am deeply invested in that society.

So, I feel like your sense of outrage at the country I live in is not patriotic, anymore than you can say that my criticism of some mid century tradition is not patriotic. I at least can confidently say that I live in a nation where you have a better chance of surviving childhood, you have a better chance of getting a good education, you are likely to live longer, etc.: life is objectively better than it was, nostalgia notwithstanding.

Moreover, sex is not “everywhere”, as I see it. In fact, our country remains more closeted about sex than others in Europe (and that’s fine; I understand that nudists roam in German parks. Not for me.). Drugs are not rampant. People are not mocked for being private about sex or for being sober. Who are you with that you get this impression? What is the source of your perception?

So you have your opinions. I see them as either based on what someone else told you, or based on a hyper-sensitivity to anecdotes* that prove a supposition, leading to confirmation bias. If you wish for your readers to agree with your opinions, facts in evidence would be helpful.

He’d rather not knock you off your pedestal.

I appreciate your willingness to have a reasonable discussion on these issues. Unfortunately the timing isn’t good right now as I have off-board things to take care of today and my response will likely take some time and will probably ignite responses from you and others that will keep me tied up for days. So thanks again for the tone and content of your post and I’ll try to get back to you as time permits.

Way to go Moriarty!

+1

“OK, goddamit, who’s Brenda?”

“An important and insightful question, dearest, and one that deserves my full attention. Regretably, I have previous appointments and commitments that demand my attendance, but I sincerely promise that I will adress these issues at my earliest convenience…”

You people have to admit that my posts get your shorts in a knot and I just don’t have time right now to deal with the fallout. You have only yourselves to blame.

 How does that work, psychologically? Did the experience teach her that sex is her only way of achieving validation, or what?

Thank you for being magnanimous. If you decide that this is a hijack from the thread, I won’t hold it against you if I don’t see you revisit the issue. But if you ever do decide to debate the relative decadence of American society, I’m sure I’ll have an opinion.

Guilty as charged.

Um, if anyone is still interested in the thread topic …

It looks like Hillary is wheeling out some new attacks on Trump that have the liberal press saying, “Finally.” Consensus is this is powerful messaging with a real chance to resonate with disaffected Republicans who can’t quite hold their noses hard enough to pull the lever for Trump. I think it’s also a good play for Clinton going into California; with her lead over Sanders tightening, it allows her to come off strong without having to attack Sanders or further alienate his supporters.

Good speech and good preview of the campaign.

It also makes a good final argument for the primary. That is a speech that Bernie Sanders could not give.

That was a wonderful speech, I hope she keeps her foot on the gas. A little more of that, and Trump will explode.

It had to be said, and I’m glad she said it, but I’m not holding my breath for Trump to explode. He’s survived and thrived despite far worse attacks on him in the GOP primaries. I have the feeling that when Obama hits the campaign trail in earnest for her in September or so, he might have the same powerful impact that Bill C. did for him in 2012.

Did he? Romney was probably harsher on him than any of the other candidates, and this was much harsher than Romney’s speech.

I’m not saying this speech or Clinton’s rhetoric in general is going to make a huge difference. But I don’t think you’re correct that he’s already thrived despite this level of attack.

Agreed. I think it’s a major mistake to underestimate him.

I’m in California & Clinton ads are on tv all the time now…and I do not think they will help her with Republicans who aren’t comfortable with The Donald.

One ad shows a sweet little girl crying that she is worried her parents will be deported since they are illegal aliens. Hilary calls the girl over & gives her an uncomfortable looking hug and states that she will do everything in her power to make sure the little girls’ parents will get to stay here.

Fast forward to the facebook posts: 'The little girl is cute and all & I feel bad, but Clinton wants to keep the flood gates open and give amnesty to every single person on the planet who wants to enter this country illegally. That is what is killing our economy. As much as I hate Trump, he is the lesser of the 2 evils".

And that statement was made by a very educated acquaintance of mine who, for the past year, was saying he would NEVER vote for that bozo Trump. I have no doubt that Clinton will win California, but the fact that Trump has become palatable to otherwise reasonable people is terrifying to me.
