I think Trump’s OWN Secret Service detail needs to come up with a strategy, in consultation with Biden’s detail. They should be prepared to move in and place themselves in front of Trump if he gets too close. They don’t have to do anything else - just be a physical presence obviously blocking Trump from approaching. I’d love to see this.
Me, too. But I’m skeptical that they would act for anything less than one of the contenders pulling out something that could be used as a weapon.
Which I don’t think even Trump would do. His ego means he wants to be acclaimed the winner based on the dominance of his personality, not based on the effects of a knife-on-flesh.
(Of course Trump pulling a knife or gun would certainly provide a quick and colorful test of the Supreme Court’s likely decision on Presidential immunity, eh?)
Heh. I’ve been trying to find out exactly how far apart the podiums will be, without success. Back in spring 2020 there was a big fuss made of a “six foot” distance for the primary debates; by the fall, it was 12.25 feet PLUS a Plexiglas wall.
I’d kind of like to see that wall brought back. Especially if it’s really transparent, and Trump doesn’t know about it in advance. Imagine the GIF that could be made of him confidently heading for Biden’s mic, and hitting the glass like Wile E. Coyote…
The debates themselves are pointless, rarely tell us anything about the candidates, and have no relevance to a President’s duties or responsibilities. And people will be carving them up for TikTok clips all night. The only upside I can see is letting people see Biden speak, which many haven’t done since the SOTU.
I agree with your comments (even the ones not quoted here). But letting people who don’t normally follow news see Biden behaving as he did during the State of the Union IS important. They won’t see this anywhere else because they don’t tune in to the news or look at it online or watch Biden’s speeches or anything else that would counter for them the lies about Biden being ga-ga.
Physical contact is not necessary to constitute assault in most places. In any event, it’s not going to happen - he will stand there, clutch his podium, guzzle his water, mutter “wrong” under his breath every few seconds, and steam impotently while waiting for his turn, because he knows he isn’t strong enough to intimidate Biden or impose his will on him, and someone else is supposed to do that stuff for him anyway.
I think it’s also unrealistic. SOTU was scripted. And, regardless of age, performance when someone is trying to trip you up goes down. Even the moderators are there to make this more challenging than reading a speech text.
