When the story boils down to “Trump iz on drugz” without attribution then it’s not accurate reporting even if there is a kernel of truth if you research back enough. Most of what I’ve seen was repeating of the accusations without the details. Maybe it’s true. I hope it’s true. It will never be proven. The fact remains it was spread like a rumor without cites throughout the internet.
My point was that the stories about Trump came out first. The accusations from the Trump side seem to me to be more about canceling out accusations of Trump’s drug use than trying to get out of the debate.
I don’t think that’s the major aspect of it. The idea of Trump taking drugs was never a big story; nobody would really care. Unless he turned out to have been high while in office, and even then it would barely break the top 20 terrible things about Trump.
The point of claiming Biden is on drugs is purely to explain Biden’s excellent public performances at events such as the SOTU. Republicans went too far with their “sleepy Joe” rhetoric, and then had to find a way to pivot that neither conceded they were wrong, nor gave Biden credit for anything.
I agree though that I don’t think it’s about trying to get out of the debate. It’s just setting up excuses and ad hominems ahead of time.
Benzedrine was huge for a long time. Valium the other way. Adderal is an important drug for many people now and can be abused. I wouldn’t be surprised if “every accusation….” Is true with Trump and he is on Adderal, I would be surprised if we had a President or even most of his staff who had not been given PEDs on a fairly frequent basis. Cf: jet lag.
Some sort of barrier would help deter Mr. “Rules Don’t Apply To Me,” certainly. But I do like the idea of a transparent wall that Trump doesn’t know is there until he walks face-first into it.
I’m still not buying the arguments that he wouldn’t do it, but instead will meekly wait at his podium until his mic is turned back on. I mean, is the idea here that Trump is too respectful of norms to try to talk into Biden’s mic? Too well-mannered? Too much of a grown-up?
It seems Trump is still planning on the debate (I won’t be surprised if he backs out at the last moment though):
You can’t say you weren’t warned: At the upcoming presidential debate on June 27, Donald Trump plans to highlight a handful of horrific murders—allegedly by undocumented migrants—and blame them on President Biden. We know this because Trump told us so right on his Truth Social feed.
“We have a new Biden Migrant Killing—it’s only going to get worse, and it’s all Crooked Joe Biden’s fault,” Trump seethed, referring to the horrible death of a 12-year-old Texas girl. “I look forward to seeing him at the Fake debate on Thursday. Let him explain why he has allowed MILLIONS of people to come into our Country illegally!”
“Donald Trump abused Adderall on the set & it made him crazy. He even snorted Adderall. Mark Burnett knew it. It’s scary,” he wrote in a tweet, accusing The Apprentice creator of knowing that the president took the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug.
Arnold’s tweet came in response to allegations from stand-up comedian Noel Casler, who claimed he worked on The Celebrity Apprentice for six years. During a set earlier this month, Casler said that Trump snorted crushed-up Adderall…
I have no doubt that Trump will be ‘medicated’ during the debate. ‘Every accusation…’, I believe, prompted him to demand that Biden take a drug test before the debate. I think Biden should have taken him up on it… as long as Trump took one as well, from a neutral drug testing company.
He’s a coward of a bully and his weapon of choice is name-calling, not physical violence
He’s not so deranged that he thinks trying to steal his opponent’s mic will play well with voters
3: If he tries it, the Secret Service will intervene, the debate will end, he will be removed for his own protection, and the headline on every paper and every website and TV channel the next day will be “TRUMP ASSAULTS PRESIDENT AT DEBATE” and he’ll likely be facing new federal charges for it
Once again: I have not only never implied that Trump would commit physical violence, I have explicitly said that I don’t believe he will touch Biden. And, no, walking up and standing next to Biden’s podium will not be defined as either Assault or as Physical Violence by any jurisdiction in the nation.
He knows it will play well with his base. He also knows that ‘we don’t need votes.’ (Some believe that the current Republican plan is to make sure that the election is thrown to the House, but that is a separate thread.)
Trump is constitutionally unable to conceive of needing to court moderates via behaving with decorum. He genuinely believes that the voters respect Strength–and that’s what he will want to show them.
Why would they? Your assumption here seems excessive.
And again, walking up to a podium and standing next to it is not “assault” under any possible definition.
Remember, Trump has Secret Service protection too. I do not want to think of what happens if Biden’s SS detail and Trump’s SS detail need to square-off against each other (to the point I wonder if anyone inside of the SS has contemplated this and discussed what to do if it ever happens).
And once he walks up to the podium and stands next to it, then what? Biden is just going to meekly back away and let him have the podium? The mic is mounted to it and if his face isn’t a couple inches away he’s not going to accomplish anything by standing there.
The scenario you describe is an SNL sketch, not something that would happen in the real world.
If that were true he wouldn’t be pandering to people with promises of green cards for community college graduates and tax-free tips.
Who said anything about him “meekly waiting?” He’ll stay at his podium and make “grandpa noises.” He’ll move on to saying, “c’mon,” “sheesh,” and shit like that. Eventually, he’ll start talking loudly, trying to throw Biden off his game. Finally, he’ll start shouting.
He will not have an audience egging him on and encouraging him. Going over to Biden’s mic would be too much of a confrontation for the little coward.
It’s not like they’re on separate teams or something. They have the same objective - protect the president and former president. In the event that Convict Donald were to try to bully Biden onstage, their obligation would be to separate them and remove Trump for his own protection.
