I also just watched his “copter talk” and he is still throwing Ukraine under the bus. “make a deal with Russia under their terms”. Republicans are sucking Putin’s dick! You cannot deny this.
Okay, no, I read the NYT reporting on this over the last week and it’s no different looking at it today. Only some of the fund is designed to go into rebuilding of Ukraine.
“The fund would be designed to reinvest some revenues into Ukraine.”
The New York Times had previously reported, on Wednesday,
“The United States would own the maximum financial interest in the fund allowed under American law, though not necessarily all. And the fund would be designed to reinvest some revenues into Ukraine.”
which tracks with what the agreement reportedly said explicitly,
“The maximum percentage of ownership of the Fund’s equity and financial interests to be held by the Government of the United States of America and the decision-making authority of the representatives of the Government of the United States of America will be to the extent permissible under applicable United States laws.”
Not to mention President Trump has been crazy about securing a source of rare earth other than China, going so far as to propose buying Greenland…

I’m so confused right now. I think the mineral deal was the equivalent of extorting Ukraine, which Trump favored because he has disgusting fantasies of colonialism and exploitation. Ann_Hedonia said that actually, it’s a benevolent deal that Trump scrapped because it didn’t fulfill his colonizer aspirations. She linked to a source, which I read because I respect her expertise on this subject.
I read the source and it didn’t seem to support what she said. This makes me a Trump supporter and I should just go away.

In any event though, the WWIII I was referring to would be between NATO (with or without the US as a member) and Russia, not the world vs the US. Apart from the aforementioned Hungary and Slovakia which would block Ukrainian admission to NATO due to their Pro-Putin/Russia governments. Even - or perhaps especially - those NATO nations that have been very pro-Ukraine and possess their own independent nuclear arsenals, namely France and the UK are going to have serious reservations about actually admitting Ukraine to NATO and having NATO end up in a direct shooting war with Russia.

FWIW it seems other world leaders are pushing back hard on what Trump did here. I only have this video (which is by a distinctly lefty YouTuber so grain-of-salt).
Trump has only managed to weaken the United States and its influence. He didn’t make America stronger. He weakened it significantly. Exactly what Putin wants.
Watching the press conference again I can see the exact moment when it goes completely off the rails. Vance is criticizing Zelinsky for not wanting a ceasefire and Zelinsky points out that Putin invaded Crimea in 2014 and in the subsequent 8 years there were cease fires that Putin repeatedly broke and that this period included the first Trump administration. Trump of course takes this as personal criticism and goes off the rails insisting that it was all Obama and Biden’s faults and of course nothing happened during his four years in office which is of course Zelinsky’s point. That’s when Trump goes into his usual random talking points; Russia, Russia, Russia, Hilary Clinton, Hunter Biden’s laptop etc while Zelinsky sits there bewildered at “the weave”.
I was feeling so horrible earlier today but I am helped somewhat by the overwhelming output of support for Ukraine from the other Western countries. Zelinsky to me is an absolutely fascinating character. He is clearly incredibly intelligent but again even though he has a law degree he gained popularity as an actor and a comedian and when his country was attacked nobody would have blamed him for leaving. Instead he rose to the occasion in a way that few people would and proved he is a true leader with an incredible love for hi country and its people. (Yes, I am a fangirl). Trump cannot recognize decency and self-sacrifice. Luckily the rest of the world clearly can and it is heartening how quickly and forcefully they all came out with support for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the MAGAts “See how strong Trump is. The world was laughing at us under Biden but respects us now” and does not realize that the world laughed at Trump during his first term but can only look on with disgust and fear at this point. Fear of what Trump may do is not the same as respect. Zelinsky is respected.
