I should add, Trump is spouting Russian propaganda. Zelensky rightfully calls it out when Trump does all his both sides and Zelensky says “they came into our territory”. Remember when Hillary called him a Russian puppet and he said “no puppet”. No one can dispute that now.

It was televised because they were holding a press conference about a mineral deal, and then got sidetracked while taking questions from the press pool, and then tensions simmered over and the whole trip (including mineral deal) got derailed.
I highly, highly doubt there was some kind of long term scheming to fly President Zelenskyy to D.C. just to humiliate him on television. President Trump clearly wanted the mineral thing, even working behind the scenes to get it delayed so that it would be signed during his administration and not Biden’s. Also, nothing President Trump said is new or shocking - he spent all of 2024 saying this is exactly his plan for Ukraine.
The only scheming I can see here is Vice President Vance patiently waiting to tank President Trump’s agenda because he’s smart enough to know it won’t work, cold enough to see Ukraine wither and die, and savvy enough to turn it into a PR win (in Trump’s eyes).

I don’t agree, I don’t think Trump wanted the mineral deal once he knew what was in.
The deal didn’t give the US a stake in Ukraines rare earth minerals, it just obligated Ukraine to use the revenues from the minerals towards rebuilding their own country and gave the US a role in the management of that portfolio.
I think Trump wanted to tank the deal because he didn’t like what had been negotiated, so he set out to do so deliberately. I don’t think he was aware the deal didn’t actually give the revenues to the US until after the conference was scheduled.
I also think this is why he sidelined Rubio during the conference and I think it perfectly explains his attitude towards Zelensky.

I assumed the U.S. got some portion of the revenues based on what Trump said at the conference, and haven’t reviewed the actual agreement itself. But what you wrote makes sense, if true, so I’ll take your word for it.

Agree. This was totally a set-up. Trump went into this to tank the deal and humiliate Zellensky. Vance didn’t just happen to be there and come up with all that bullshit on the fly.

Right now the US public is being blasted with a firehose of disinformation equal to that of Putin’s Russia. The combination of disinformation before the election plus voter suppression gave Trump the presidency. Now that he has the levers of power it’s going to be increasingly hard to get the truth to the masses. The First Amendment? It doesn’t apply to anything Trump deems “Fake News”. Given its track record, the Supreme Court will probably agree.

I’m also impressed by the symbolism. Meeting with Biden has a welcoming fire in the fireplace. Meeting with the Orange Felon shows the fireplace stone cold, even though it’s winter and fireside talks in the White House are the stuff of tradition.
