If you read his exact words, he was calling for a ban “until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.” It might be reasonable to interpret that as “indefinitely,” but there’s also an argument for declaring at any point that that particular condition has been met. Like most of the nonsense that he spews, it is crafted to say nothing while implying a lot.
I don’t have any difficulty believing 1 will =0 eons before Trump would decide any given vetting process sufficiently identifies terrorists.
Then why don’t we just ban the immigration of terrorists? Banning all Muslims from immigration because many terrorists are Muslim makes about as sense as banning all males from immigration because many of the terrorists are male.
Yes, but it’s never going to be up to Trump, even if he (gods forbid) were to become president. The problem isn’t what he says; anyone who actually has a say in policy knows it’s nonsense. It’s the hatred he is fanning and encouraging to come out into the open. America has gotten much uglier in just one week. I shudder to think what will follow.

Then there is the slight problem that terrorists might possibly lie about their religion. So, you can ban all Arab-looking people. But Pakistanis and Indians look pretty much the same, so you can ban all the Indians also. And there are plenty of Muslims in Africa, so we had better ban anyone black. And there are Muslims in Indonesia, of course, and even China. Ban them. Can the customs officials really tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese people? Thought not. Ban anyone Asian.
That just leaves white Europeans. And Latin America, but Trump is already banning them. But we then have Chechens. Better ban Europeans also, just to be safe.
Hell with the wall between us and Mexico, we had better build a wall everywhere. Maybe he can get the Saudis to pay for it.

One should notice here that Trump was given an award in person by Muhhamed Ali a few years back and Trump just recently told us that he could not remember any great American muslim sportsman.

I don’t know. My rep Erik Paulsen said very similar things when asked about the process for settling Syrian refugees in America. Trump may have more supporters in the other branches than we’d like to think.

All my relatives are Muslim - I think you would enjoy meeting any of them.
They go to the mosque every Friday, say Ameen (Amen) at the end of the service and shake hands with their neighbor just like you do at Church. It’s an inclusive “feel good” environment, and my relatives are charitable, giving, and are the furthest thing from extremist or violent.
To your point about loving other religions, not threaten, I can tell you that in Islam, Jesus (and the other prophets) are held in high regard. Miriam is a popular name with Muslims (indeed - I have two nieces named that), and is the Arabic form for Mary (Magdalene).
To your point, all the religious books are intolerant. Portions of the Old Testament are violent and intolerant. It’s part of the Bible. You can’t disavow it’s link to Christianity because it is inconvenient. By the same token, you can cherry-pick the violent parts of the Koran, or you can cherry-pick the parts that hold other God-centered religions in high regard.
During the Egyptian revolution, Muslims stood in a circle around the Churches on Sunday to protect them, as did the Christians around some Mosques on Friday.
The evening news in Egypt talks about the deaths in the various middle-east countries from people in the region that died because of terrorism or fighting terrorists. My relatives and acquaintances in Egypt don’t see themselves in that violence, just like you don’t see yourself in the Christian Planned Parenthood shooter, or in any of the violent shootings in the US committed by people who happen to be Christians.
The Islam practiced by extremists is seen as a perversion of Islam, just like Christian Extremists can’t in good conscious be called true Christian.

He thinks people should obey the law and he wants to protect American citizens from harm. These are actually eumerated as official duties of the presidency, are they not?

Thus you can see the answer to why many liberals oppose banning Muslims from entering the country – because it would be monstrous (if less monstrous then killing them) and incredible overkill. Also, it would make the vast majority of Muslims who don’t want to kill us less favorably inclined to cooperate, and we need their help to fight terrorism.
