Trump's trial just ended--let's predict the verdict! (Verdict is Guilty on All Counts May 30, 2024)

10 hours of deliberation. 34 counts.

17 minutes deliberation per count on average.

That seems pretty speedy for a trial of such repercussions.

Not really. This was the sort of case where if you could find your way to guilty on the first count, that pretty much decided the rest of the counts. The fact pattern was identical for all.

Certainly not a complaint. Seems to indicate there wasn’t much disagreement on the substance.

I don’t think there ever was. The system worked.

THIS is the first thing I thought of when I heard.

Hey man, I’m an optimist by heart… but I have been really disappointed for a long time.

Since all sources say prison time is “unlikely,” is it going to be mainly a hefty fine?

With good reason, I’m sad to say.

Probation

Followed swiftly by violation of conditions.
Followed even more swiftly by a move to Rikers.

(I live in hope)

Wow! I didn’t expect it that fast. And I’m glad my guess was wrong.
Catturd may have exploded.

Imagine being Donald Trump’s probation officer.

Of what? He’s running out of dough.

Well put.

That might actually be kinda fun. Stock up on air freshener though.

I think Judge Merchan is going to surprise you.

CALLED IT!

:grinning:

That’s actually a good guess, and not just because I had the same idea. Seriously, I could see probation under conditions to start, accompanied by a suspended prison sentence. Break the conditions, and that prison sentence comes crashing down.

Conditions would have to be crafted to allow for campaigning, of course (e.g. he can leave New York State, but he may not leave the United States), but that could easily be done, I think.

I am VERY VERY glad to be wrong! Absolutely a wonderful jury!

Can you imagine being the poor probation officer who meets with Trump and has to go over the conditions of supervision?

I actually think it would be cruel to subject that person to the harassment and scrutiny of Trump’s fan base.

For that reason alone I think it would be simpler and safer to give him a prison sentence.

And were I the DA I’d be asking for a maximum sentence. This defendant has zero remorse, and it’s important to send a message to all other people who might seek high office that they must respect and obey the law in order to ensure the integrity of our democracy.

Hang ‘em high!

Or Moscow

I’m concerned the way this might go, pretty much the whole GOP is saying Trump is innocent and is the target of a witch hunt. The implication being if the democrats have done this in an attempt to stop Trump getting elected they will do that tto prevent democrats getting elected. In 2020 Biden and most other republicans refused to back Trump’s claims that the election was rigged.

  • Will states with republican chief election officials “find the votes” necessary for Trump to win their state?
  • As the Judicial system has proven to be total broken (in Trump’s and most Republican minds) will the juditiary have its powers greatly reduced and the President effictively becoming all powerful?
  • Will any high standing democrat receive a barrage of charges against them with the intent of ensuring they receive jail time in in some other way unable to effectly stand?
  • Could the eventual result be a Russian style presidency where the only people allowed to stand against the President are selected by the president as peole with no chance of winning but able to provide the illusion of choice?
