Truth in advertising. Or not.

They pulled those ads for that very reason.

To be fair, most American cheeses are chemically engineered and artificially colored. As I understand, cheese is no longer made “naturally” with rennin, but rather with chemicals designed to replace it.

Cheese is naturally an off-white color, but manufacturers have found that Americans seem to prefer orange or bright yellow cheeses. In the “olden days” they used to use carrots to add the coloring. (Remember Ma making cheese in the* Little House on the Prairie* books?)

The brilliant Stan Freberg liked to use the principle he expressed as “more honesty than the client had in mind” combined with a sense of humor and a sense that the commercial didn’t take itself too seriously. People were disarmed by the honesty and amused, and those ad campaigns were very successful.
