I’m assigned to lead a fun-question-for-discussion every Friday night’s church fellowship - can’t really call them icebreakers since we’ve all known each other for a while, but basically, it should be about 7-10 minutes of fun chat led by a question.
I’m trying to think of things that would be suitably non-boring (none of that “what is your favorite ice cream” yawner stuff) but also can’t go offensive (I would ask “If our fellowship were to produce a movie, who would be suited to play which role?” but don’t want someone then piping up, “Oh yeah, Alice should totally play the villainous bitch!”) Any suitably provoking but harmless ideas?
‘Have any of you been in a situation where people around you reacted unexpectedly? I remember one time I was like, “Would you look at the marbling in that meat! That’s gotta be tender!” and everyone else at the autopsy was like [horrified expression’].’
We use similar sorts of questions when we screen potential participants for focus groups – in those, we’re looking for people who give more than two-word answers, and can talk about the “why” behind their answers.
A lot of those sorts of questions could work for your purpose; they can include things like:
What is your favorite childhood memory about the holidays (could be used for Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.)? What makes it your favorite?
If you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would you choose? And, what would you like to talk about with them over dinner?
What is your favorite TV show (or movie, or song) right now? Why do you like it?
If you could choose any other career or occupation, other than what you are doing right now, what would it be? Why would you select that occupation?
Two truths and a lie is always a fun one, and can work with almost any group.
I had 'em going once at a meeting where I talked lovingly and longingly about how I had to give up skydiving when I had my wrist surgery a couple years back.
I’d think your favorite Gospel or favorite book of the Bible would also work. Love to see if anyone picked 1 Chronicles or one of the other books that can be a bit of a slog.
Maybe the rule could be that members take turn with the ice breakers? An indefinite series of these would be wearing on the moderator. Other suggestions:
-Cats: declawed or not?
-Cats: inside or outside?
-Bicycles: ride through stop signs?
-Amber alerts: useful or not?
-CRT: what is it?
