Trying to find an old English children's book with Freyr's folding ship Skíðblaðn

years ago I read an English children’s book (probably aimed at about 10 year olds) about an English boy who buys a wooden model ship in an old second hand store. Turns out that the one-eyed proprieter of the store is Odin, and he’s sold the boy Freyr’s ship, Skíðblaðnir. The boy and his brother and sisters then have a series of adventures with the ship.

I’d be interested in finding the book again, but haven’t had any luck. Can anyone suggest any ways to track it down? I would guess it was written in the mid-30s, by the “English prep school” flavour.

The Ship that Flew?

that’s it! thanks! how did you find it? (I’m always amazed at how well others search, and how poorly I do…)

Googled the ship’s name + “childrens”.

The only thing I get with that combination is this thread itself.

Ah, I tell lies, I googled the anglicized version of the ships name and “childrens”. Actually the search string appears at the top of the google books page I linked to.

so it is. thanks again.
