Trying to get some Records Management education - Help!

I’m currently working as a file clerk, and I am really enjoying it. I want to learn more about Records Management, with an eye to possibly making a career of it, but I am running into brick walls trying to get more education in this field. Living here in Calgary, we seem to have only one course available at the local technical school, and not only are they asking an exorbitant price for five two-day courses, but they are also holding the continuing education courses on work days!

I can neither afford the course, nor to take all that time off of work, so I am looking for correspondence or online courses in records management/filing systems/whatever it is known as locally. Anybody currently working in this field, or having taken these types of courses, I would really appreciate any information you might have on how to get where I’m trying to go without bankrupting myself.

(ps - I’ve talked to the local schools and tried to contact the local Records Management Association, but have gotten nowhere with both.)

ARMA has a home study course - there is more information here, uncluding the statement that SUNY does online courses.
You also might see if there are any library/information science schools in your area and if they have a records management concentration.

Thanks, Lsura. I got a book title from that site, and I have ordered it now. I’m hoping that will be a good first step.

I was checking out some library/info science job sites this morning and ran across this link:

The Handbook for Records Managment Careers - a lot of it looks to be basic information (“How do I Find a job in RM?” type stuff), but there might be some new information for you in there.
