The best way I can describe is top and bottom are identical but one slightly smaller as it fits inside the other. It would be like two pieces of channel where the flanges were cut to a peek like a tent, say 2" There is a hole drilled close to the top of the peek. A rod slides through all the holes connecting the two pieces.?
Pinned hinge.
It sounds vaguely like a pinned hinge, but I don’t understand the references to a “top and bottom”, or “cut to a peak like a tent”. Can you post a photo?
deleted, never mind
I don’t have a picture but imagine 2 flat pieces of wood sitting on top of each other. Put this hinge in-between the two and the bottom would swing back and forth. I looked up swivel head hinges and found simila
It keeps telling me I cannot imbed a media image?? I just did a sketch
If not that, does the thing you want look like anything in this page?
Not even similar to that, the mounting brackets face each other, and are about 3" apart. Look at the left bracket on the image I posted, both sides of the hinge would look like that.
So two nested C-shaped bales. Hmm. I do not know the name, but your initial description had me thinking of something just like @Mangetout’s post #8.
At least were all on the right track now.
I found a thing that seems to resemble my current understanding of what you’re describing:
Or this:
Thats it!, The large double U hinge!! Now I just have to see if I can find my size. Not hard to make but every time I have to get something welded it costs me a good hit. Thanks!
You can’t upload images directly to the SDMB. You have to upload them somewhere else and then link to them.
I personally use Imgur. Plenty of other free pic hosting sites exist.
I will set that up, I don’t know why I didn’t do it al long time ago.
Does it have to be the case that one of the U-brackets fit inside the other? If not, it would be easy to make something like this from two U-brackets of the same size, plus a long bolt.
- arranging them like the shapes in this image (which has nothing to do with hinges, but shows two interlocked U shapes)

I get a lot more looking for ‘u bolt hinge’ is than double U. ‘Weld on’ seems good, too.
I am not sure, I think that would work as long as the swinging end of it remains centered. I am using Unistrut for my frame and I just realized I can get by with 1 U shape, just grind the end of my Unistrut to receive it. A 2" wide U 3 maybe 3/1/2 high would work perfectly. I will play with some cardboard to nail down my dimensions.
