About 10-12 years ago or so I was with some friends in Wisconsin at their family’s cabin. On Sunday we got up and drove about 30 miles or so to a place that was out of any town in almost a prairie-esque setting. (No other businesses or homes were nearby) It had a restaurant with a smorgasbord as well as a separate building with a gift shop that was in a classical 2-story scandinavian design.
I’ve been searching all over for it (and it might cease to exist now), but I know a couple places it isn’t for sure:
Where was the cabin? Any idea where in Wisconsin you started?
If QtM shows up he’s usually got a pretty good grip on this stuff.
I beleive there’s some Norse stuff off the freeway between Milwaukee and Fond Du Lac or Sheboygan somewhere, I’m trying to remember the name of it, I can really only picture the building.
Was it the Norske Nook? I’ve been to the original in Osseo, which is much as you describe (though I don’t remember a smorgasbord). There are several locations now, the newest ones definitely have a chain restaurant feel to them, unfortunately.
It wasn’t the Norske Nook but nice guess. None of their locations are outside of a city.
As for where it was in Wisconsin, I’m blanking completely. I know it wasn’t a border town and the cabin was on a river near a lake in a small kinda progressive town . There were a couple shops in town and they all had the standard Wisconsin “AGAC” as we called it. (Go anywhere in Wisconsin and almost all of the stores have the X and gifts and cheese).
I remember the place wasn’t off of 90/94/43/39 directly as it was more in the middle of nowhere on a county highway.
If you’re sure it wasn’t off of 94 or 43, I’m going to stop racking my brain and asking around for the name of that place.
I’m still guessing QtM (or Musicat) will be your best shot.
No college. I looked at Stoughton and New Glarus and neither of them fit the bill either. I’m partially wondering if it was another Norske Nook location that’s since closed.
I was hoping in was Norske Nook in Osseo (also Rice Lake and Eu Claire). It’s a staple of our annual summer vacation to Canada (via Wisconsin). They have the best pies! The best, Jerry!
I think johnpost was talking about the smorgasbord. And that wasn’t cheese, it was stink bait. I know, I know, it’s hard to tell sometimes, especially around Monroe.
I believe there is a place called Little Norway,it should be on the map. I have read advertisments for there in the paper once. It may be near Madison?
How did you get to the cabin? I’ve heard of lost weekends, but you have no idea where you were whatsoever? Musta been some Wisconsin style drinking going on.
Any possibility of calling the friends up and at least asking where the cabin was?
Yeah, I’ve asked a couple friends who were there that weekend (the cabin owner and family are MIA) and no one really remembers either. We all assure each other that it did happen and we do exist though.
I just remember we were playing poker and doing shots when we started to run low on alcohol at the cabin. I got a list and walked up the dirt road to the liquor store and got A bottle of light rum, a bottle of gin, and then a bottle of light vodka (not computing that with rum there’s a difference in color, with the light vodka it was just half the alcohol). I caught some sh** for that.
