trying to think of a lesser greek or roman god...

There’s a book called “the go between” by LP Hartley, about a 60-year-old man remembering a summer he spent in 1900 at a manor estate as a lower-class 12 year old boy. People staying at the estate (upper class) used the main character to carry messages between them to arrange meeting for sexual encounters and stuff. It’s a good book (often taught in high schools, where I was exposed to it first).

There’s a concept in the book, where the character is related (I think) to a greek or roman god, but I cannot recall which one it is. Basically, he acted as a go-between for the big gods, hence it’s relation to this book.

So the question is, what’s this go-between god’s name?

Mercury or Hermes perhaps? They were the messengers of the gods in Roman and Greek mythology respectively.

I know that Ganymede was the “cupbearer” to Zeus/Jove. Not sure if he was also a go between.

Hermes/Mercury was a messenger god, wasn’t he? But he was hardly lesser.

All I can think of for now.

Yah, it must be Hermes! Thanksabunch!

Rats. I came in for the Mercury/Hermes answer, but I’ve been beaten to the punch.
