Tsunami headed for the Phillipines

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) – A powerful quake struck off southwestern Taiwan on Tuesday, triggering a potentially destructive tsunami that was headed toward the Philippines on the second anniversary of the deadly waves that killed thousands in south Asia.

The quake, with a magnitude of between 6.7 and 7.2, was felt throughout Taiwan, Japan’s Meteorological Bureau said. It swayed buildings and knocked objects off the shelves in the capital, Taipei.

The bureau said the 3-foot-high tsunami was expected to hit Basco in the Philippines.

“There is a possibility of a destructive local tsunami,” the bureau said.

1 meter tall where though? In deep ocean, 1 metre can translate to something pretty damn large at landfall. I’m hoping they mean 1 metre predicted total landfall height. Mind you, from the timing, it should have hit already, so hopefully no news is good news.

What is it about Boxing Day and earthquakes? Bam, Banda Acheh, and now Basco.

And there was an earthquake in Scotland this morning too - but only 3.5.

An official at Japan’s Meteorological Agency said there was no longer any danger of a destructive tsunami headed for the Philippines, as had been predicted.

“The expected waves did not materialize,” said Hiroshi Koide of the agency’s earthquake section. “The danger has passed.”
