You don’t have to go that far back. One could point out that during the Bush administration when the military were still booting out all gay people, they ended up expelling the majority of their Arabic translators in training despite this being a skillset they were desperately in need of in Iraq. Not being able to communicate with the locals is a recipe for disaster in a military conflict, particularly if you’re trying a “hearts and minds” approach, but the conservative view was that it was better to purge the homosexuals from the fold even though it increased the risk of US soldiers dying. Diversity of talents and backgrounds does not prevent people from working together for a common purpose with common values.
As for the title of this thread: the thing to remember is that Tucker Carlson is already afraid. People like him and Ingraham and O’Reilly are deep-down terrified of people who are different from them and will do everything in their petty power to lash out at those who frighten them. That doesn’t mean protesters should accost his family or vandalize his home - those things are still bad and uncalled-for. But Carlson remains a chickenshit whiner willing to sell out every principle America stands for to avoid having to face the reality of what a goddamn coward he is.

It’s a good question and I don’t have an answer to it. I don’t even necessarily think it applied to all the Arabic translators they had; it seemed to affect the younger, newer ones disproportionately. But it is clear that their loss had an adverse affect on the war effort.

Possible theory based on no actual knowledge of the field or the issue: Arabic countries are, in general, less tolerant of homosexuality than the USA. Young homosexuals in Arabic countries with English as a second language flee persecution to the USA, and become translators in disproportionate numbers compared with any other profession. Thus, (relatively) lots of gay Arabic translators in the USA.
