I know it’s wrong to anthropomorphize animals and all…but what else could possibly explain this?

They mate offshore, and females nest at night; I wonder what that male was doing on the beach during the day.

As a trained biologist (who has moved on to other things) I know the temptation to anthropomorphize is irresistible but often fallacious. In this case tho it truly makes you wonder.
My older beagle died 2 weeks ago. My younger one Nordberg has been miserable. She was running out in the yard 30 times a day looking for him. She just lays around looking depressed. She is so sad it is heart breaking. Her appetite is very low. If I didn’t take her for walks a couple times a day, she would just sit in the chair and stare.
