TV Announcers' Voices

Why do announcers on TV–giving promos for TV-program episodes or movie-ad voice-overs–tend to speak in a dramatic whispered or breathy voice? It sounds like the kind of voice you’d expect to hear from a stalker calling you late at night…

It gets attention.

I remember back in the 70s, when the ABC staff announcer always had either Looove or murdeeeer in every single promo, said in the same tone of voice each time.

That was Pride of Cleveland Ernie Anderson, aka Ghoulardi.

And father of director Paul Thomas Anderson.

Just wanted to note that one of the classic TV announcers, Dick Tufeld, just passed away.

I think they’re all trying to sound like Clint Eastwood.
