We had a local realtor go missing after she went to show a home to someone. Terrible case and I hope she’s found soon and unharmed. It’s not looking good right now. Her husband got text messages later that night claiming she was out drinking with friends. Something totally out of character for her. Could be the abductor trying to buy more time.
What amazes me is the tv news is running this glamor shot of her. She’s a woman in her fifties and this shot makes her look forty. Nobody would recognize her from that photo if by some chance she is freed. You could walk right past her and never recognize the lady.
Such a horrible story. Realtors meet strange people at listings all the time. They really should require them to present ID at their office **before **going to the listing. But quite often they just meet up at the house that is for sale.
I’d guess that in a rush to be the first to report it, they just Googled her name and found her head shot. That seems pretty reasonable. Later on they (like your second link) would probably have found other pictures. Either provided to them from the police or on her Facebook page. But when it’s a matter of them getting the story on the air as fast as possible, I don’t think it’s wrong to use the first picture the A)find and B) know is the correct picture.
Who’s “they”?
I know when I used to look at apartments, some of the landlords would either keep my ID in their desk at the office or make a copy of it before we walked over to look at the model for just this reason, but that was usually just a policy that they personally had.
I guess it depends on the Realtor and the type of property they list. This property was a foreclosure but it was a nice riverfront property. Fairly expensive 4000 sq ft home. The lady felt safe meeting a potential customer there. She probably had done it thousands of times in her career. This time it wasn’t a customer waiting to meet her.
I bet Realtors with low income property listings require ID before going to the listing. They need that security of leaving behind a record of who they are meeting.
This one surprised me. I don’t recall them doing this. But my last home purchase was in 1989. I imagine they are more careful these days. I’ll watch for this behavior next time I watch House Hunters.
Last night, my local news feed ran a story of a semi involved in a hit and run fatality accident on the freeway. They said the rig involved was orange and had the word Allied on the side. First thing I, and about 200 other facebook users, think is Allied Van Lines. Sure, there are other companies with Allied in the name, but how many large orange semis with the word Allied on them are there on the road?
Turns out to be a wrong post. The Allied Van Lines driver was only a witness, the fatality accident was between a motorcycle and and pick up that had crossed over the center median.
Got to hand it to News Channel 9 for getting the story out first, tho.
Misleading early info can be a problem. ymmv of course, since this IS the SDMB
I remember there was a bit of an uproar about the “glamour shot” thing back when the murder of 16-year old Adrienne Jones (the Texas cadet murder case) was getting lots of local news coverage. They would always, always, always flash the same picture of poor Adrienne, a snapshot from one of those Glamour Shots storefronts in the malls back then. She looked about 25 in the picture, very sexy, and it was so glaringly inappropriate! She was a high school kid, for crying out loud!
I remember her family actually came forward and asked the media to stop circulating “that picture” because it sent the wrong message about their daughter, who was the victim of a senseless murder, after all.
The press loves sexy shots even when they aren’t necessarily appropriate.
They just announced an arrest warrant for a suspect. The warrant is for one count of kidnapping. Sure hope this lady is still alive and they find her with him.
This is the first major abduction that I can recall in my own home city area. They’ve had hundreds of people searching a large area near the crime scene for the past three days.
It didn’t end well. Coroner and Sheriff’s office is on the scene. At least they have the man that did this and can file the necessary charges. Hopefully they’ll go for the death penalty this time.
It plugs into the impulse that had one of it’s earliest examples in this LIFE magazine photo, which is obviously what you’re meant to think, but would never be forgiven for saying out loud: “aw, what a waste. I would have fucked her.”
It’s kind of odd, but I keep hearing the victim described as “50 years old” and her husband tearfully pleading for the return of his wife of “more than 36 years”…
Was she married at 13 or 14? Fibbing about her age? Bad fact-checking by the media?
At any rate, at least they found the body. Should make prosecution a lot easier. The suspect looks guilty as hell.
Well, this guy’s foolish actions lead to the discovery of the shallow grave.
Sat. evening he abducts & eventually kills the Realtor. Sunday afternoon, he gets in a car wreck and somehow that got the police’s attention. He gives the cops the slip at the hospital (they didn’t have an arrest warrant yet).He steals a dump truck from his former employer. He’s arrested Monday with that dump truck. They found the shallow grave directly directly behind the concrete mixing plant. An obvious place for the police to search because he worked there until very recently.
All this because this POS considered this hard working woman a rich broker.
I’ve always wondered why the depth of the makeshift grave is detail-worthy. Somehow, a “shallow grave” gets the headlines every time.
That said, I’m truly sorry someone just trying to make a living is leaving behind a grieving spouse for no good reason besides (from what little I can tell) “crazy person kills other person.”
Maybe a 2nd person was involved? Odd that he was questioned and released. The sheriff’s office has a news conference scheduled this afternoon. Maybe this issue about a 2nd guy can get cleared up. http://www.katv.com/story/26653385/kidnapping-suspect-in-custody
Worse than the Glamour shots are the duckface shots. There was a woman and her six kids who were all killed by her father. One of the pics of her and one of the kids they showed constantly was a duckface selfie that was posted on the mom’s facebook. Sure mom and kid may have just been having fun and being silly but now they have been forever immortalized in duckface.
